You have triggered strong feelings in my heart (and I honestly mean no disrespect to you), every solution is better than these y-danglers. These are awful, mushy and came about because the knuckleheads trying to rapidly build bikes in a store couldn't understand how to setup cantilevers properly. They make good brakes bad.

Also most mushiness from cantilever breaks can come from too much cable housing being used on the bike (especially at the last junction under the seat tube), or improper hanger location.

I personally have liked the old Dia Compe and Shimano styles, as well as the newer Tektro triangles. Dia Compe used to make a bit wider one that worked real well.
