That is done with Garmin Express or wirelessly. I have a 1040 Solar as well as a 1050 and just updated my Europe and North American maps with no issue.
I tried both. That is why I went back to trying the desktop software.
I can't say this explains everyone's problem, but my issue is that when I plug in the Garmin Edge 840, with or without software, it does not appear as a mounted disk image. That is due to the Apple security settings mentioned above, NOT Garmin. (It worked on the same hardware, older OS, previously.) The problem is when you relax the security settings, it sometimes mounts, sometimes doesn't, and if it does mount, something is buggy. (This is via USB-C btw. )
"You don't need to do it your way" really is not an acceptable answer, although I am deeply grateful it works for you.
