Ravenswood, Edgewater, and Andersonville [edit: these are some of the northernmost neighborhoods in the city] all have a lot going for them, and rent can go a lot further than in Wicker Park/Bucktown or even Logan Square. The residents seem a bit older and there's less of a scene, but there are plenty of good bars/restaurants.
As far as yuppiness goes, Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, and Lakeview are the ones to watch out for if that sort of things bothers you. That said, there were girls wearing Hollister t-shirts at the Rainbo on Saturday, so even Wicker Park ain't safe.
