So, I'm going to Chicago

My girlfriend and I are going to Chicago to visit friends/appartment hunt/interview for jobs. I arrive friday april 14th arround 9pm and leave about 9pm monday the 17th, and sometime inbetween then I thought it would be cool to go out drinking with a bunch of you chicago folk. No riding because of my shoulder... unless I can get away from the lady she tells me I shouldn't be riding until the doctors say it's ok. But anyway I'm going to be moving out there so I'd like to meet some more of you and hang out with those I've already met. So post up here any ideas of things I should do while I'm there and when would be good for everyone to meet up. I was thinking saturday night.. but I'm open for sunday too... or maybe friday but I'd have to talk that over with the lady. I'd really like to know where I should go though... i.e. like neighborhoods to check out... bars to check out that kind of stuff... cool galaries I should visit you know stuff like that. I'm really excited to go!!!

Henry, you lousy jerk! How dare you even consider moving to Chicago when I'm stuck forever in Boston. You now officially owe me a drink.

woo hoo! Henry, I'm so glad you'll be joining the migration. I won't be there yet that weekend, but I'm sure there will be many, many weekends in the future which our livers should fear...

I was thinking about it, if you are here hanging out with us you dont need any of my specific comments on things to do. I am not sure if I can make it out Saturday night or on sunday, too much happening, so if I am not out, Welcome and I am sure we will be meeting soon. Otherwise, are you familiar with Chicago, or do you want recomendations on areas of the city to be scouting out. Do you have a car, becasue that is a big factor in where you live both in terms of public transit and parking. There are some areas where it is near impossible to park but have good Public transit access and others with not so hot PT, but it is not hard to park. Are you looking for something that is in a trendy, happening neighborhood, or do you want something that is cheaper in an area that is sort of up and coming? Or do you want to hang out with all the college football players and drink expensive cheap beer?

Here goes my not so much rant of advice.

Damen / Division , Damen / Chicago ukranian village area. I am not too sure on what people are paying for rent, but it is located just south of Wicker park where alot of the hipper resturants and places have sprung up. I would imagine that rent would be cheaper than in the wicker park proper, but I have heard that rent can be found for reasonable prices in wicker park as well (Damen, North and Milwualkee.)

Humbolt park is one of those areas that many would consider to be a boarderline community. Nothing bad, close to the same wicker park area, but a little further west. Western / Chicago, Agusta, Division, North. The El is close to some parts of this neighborhood but not close to others, lots of busses (sometimes unreliable). The rent is fairly cheap. The neighborhood is predominatly puerto rican. Not a bad place, I know plenty of people who live there. there is alot of gentrification happening in that neighborhood right now becasue of Wicker PArk.

Pilsen. It is further south. Wicker park is 2000 north, Pilsen is 1800 South. The neighbor hood is alot like humbolt Park mentioned above. It is in transition. There are alot of little grocery stores, coffee shops etc. really cheap mexican food. The neighborhood is predominatly Hispanic. I live in that neighborhood and find it to be nice. There is alot of the bike community that ilves in the area. If you think of the city in terms of evolving, Wicker park used to be the Artist community becasue of the cheap rents, well that is shifting from Wicker PArk to Pilsen. There are alot of teardowns happening in wicker park and rehabbing buildings into condos, so the cheap rent is going away and that community of people is moving to other places, namely pilsen. Parking is easy, dont leave anything in your car = broken windows (but that is true of anywhere in this city.) PT is really good, Blue Line EL is blocks from just about anywhere. Alot of buss service as well.

And then a little further south is Bridgeport (3100 south and Halstead). I am pretty ignorant to the neighbor hood except that I have had some friends live down there and they have enjoyed it. It is worth checking out.

Then there is east pilsen (18th and Pilsen) which is like the upscale pilsen artist community, a really nice area where the rent is a little more expensive than the normal area of pilsen, but the apts seem to be more of the rehabbed quality, full gutting and new walls, fixtures and such. The hard part is the PT is really limited in this area. One bus that runs north south. Parking is not bad.

There is Logan Square which is nice as well, but again it is an area that I have limioted knowlege of, but I know there is a few people here that live there. Nice area, Easy Public Transit.

The further north you go the more yuppieish it gets, harder parking, more expensive rent. Not to say it is all bad, I just avoid the people that typically call it home.

Spoken like a true Southsider. Ravenswood, Edgewater, and Andersonville [edit: these are some of the northernmost neighborhoods in the city] all have a lot going for them, and rent can go a lot further than in Wicker Park/Bucktown or even Logan Square. The residents seem a bit older and there's less of a scene, but there are plenty of good bars/restaurants.

As far as yuppiness goes, Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, and Lakeview are the ones to watch out for if that sort of things bothers you. That said, there were girls wearing Hollister t-shirts at the Rainbo on Saturday, so even Wicker Park ain't safe.

Stickerguy and I tore up one from that place on Division - Pizza Metro I believe? Plus there are some good bars right in that vicinity. And Cleo's for freefoodSaturdays and Club Foot and Inner Town and a slew of Zimne Piwos...that's right. You know it is a good bar if the Old Style swings the words Zimne Piwo below.

Pizza Metro is the "insert word for turd here". Potato rosemary pizza...

I never got a chance to try Pequod's. They apparently will be back and they're currently delivering from their suburban location into the city even.
