I was young and dumb.

mtb is a different story of course
"Why, when I were a lad, we'd ride 21s pumped up to 140 psi, narrow saddles with no relief channel, and bar tape with no shock absorbing qualities at all! We'd seek out roads with old cracked asphalt, concrete roads with joints every 10 feet, and newly chipsealed pavement! And did we complain? NO! Because we kept our jaws clenched so we wouldn't bite our tongues!!!"

I did try 32s, but it turned out the rims were too narrow and they only inflated to 29mm. Not much difference between that and 28s.
