From what I understand, the parrot thing is a total red herring. Our reliance on coal is a total farce, and here we have a federal government looking for any excuse it can to avoid Kyoto or any alternative power source for that matter.

My only problem with solar/wind is at this stage is it cannot produce enough juice for industry (I think its called baseload power? really not sure) So while it will cut emissions for homes, but since industry is the biggest user of electricity emissions probably wont fall that much?
Nuclear is probably a bad option as well because its also a fossil fuel so in 50 - 100 years you're back at square one.
