I certainly take some satisfaction in seeing improvement - power over duration, time on a segment or route, etc - so data is helpful with that. Maybe it's an age thing - I want to convince myself that I haven't hit the inevitable downhill slide just yet

One of the guys on the Saturday ride is like that. We had a good ride yesterday. Today was a social recovery ride. I encouraged him to join but he insisted he had to do his “recovery/zone 2 ride” on his trainer. We had a sunny and fun ride, which was 100% joy (for me) but clearly we are all wired a little differently.
That's super lame. Why is a social ride incompatible with recovery? Is he that strict about staying within z2? Is he afraid that he's going to see a town sign and won't be able to resist a sprint?
