Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not sure who named him. Possibly the farm, not the original owners.

When I was riding across the country I stopped by a farm in Iowa as a teenager was hosing down her 4-H prize-winning young bull named Ace of Spades. (He was all black.). She told me she would probably have him slaughtered in a year or so. That made me sad.

Eating roadkill is legal in some states. For example, in Montana, if you hit a deer, antelope, moose, or elk, you can take it home for personal consumption. No roadside dressing is allowed. You then must go online and “register” the kill with the state. From what I have read, it’s popular. One benefit is that it means the state doesn’t have to pick up and dispose of the carcass.

4-H really is just for farm kids. When our kids were little, I think we went to one intro meeting. Basically, kids raise an animal or animals to sell, was how it worked. I think it may help beat the Disney aspect out of it.

I'd say the relationship between farmers and hunters on one hand, and meat animals on the other is more complex than people who aren't farmers or hunters generally understand.

Based on the number of dead deer I saw on roads in MT, I'd say the state can use all the help getting rid of roadkill carcasses they can get!

For sure. The owner of a campground once said to me “Montana deer are dumb.”

Of course, if you hit a moose or elk the state might be disposing of your carcass.

It turns out there is a new cat in the neighborhood, we don't know who its owner is and it does not have a collar. It also does not have a tail. It seems quite interested in Jackie.

The problem is the new cat has learned how to use our cat door, and has been coming INTO THE HOUSE. Mrs datlas is NOT pleased.

I will need to see if I can replace our "dumb" cat door flap with one of those magnetic activated ones that only opens up when the cat with the magnet around its collar is nearby. I am afraid the sizing of cat doors may not be universal, so even if I get a new one, I expect the switch may be a challenge. For now, we are locking the cat door at night so there won't be any overnight suprises.

Yeah, you'd need something out of "Road Warrior" for them.

A friend who grew up in Colorado told me about hunting elk there. He's a little guy - like 5'0" and around 110-120. He shot an elk, and then had to quarter it and pack it out. He was probably carrying his body weight in meat each trip of several miles. I said, "You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din."

If you are trying to bond with them you should abstain from drinking anything they don't drink.

There are all types of online calculators that help your make the "right" decision, but these simply calculate lifetime benefit based on your life expectancy. They do NOT adjust for two important factors:

1. Money is often more valuable when you are younger so you can travel, buy new bikes, eat at nice restaurants etc., whereas when you are older you may not be able to take advantage of these items (of course you can argue you need the money to pay for aides etc) but in general the utility of each dollar is greater when you are younger
2. There is a pretty good chance that SS benefits will be cut in 10 years when the fund goes insolvent. I don't think this will be eliminated but a 20% cut across the board COULD occur. It might be better to get the "sure thing" earlier than a reduced benefit later. Maybe.

Based on these items, I may consider collecting at 62 or 65 rather than waiting for "full retirement" at 67.
Don't forget, if you collect before age 67, there is a dollar for dollar deduct for every dollar you make over a max.

Wasn't worth it for me to consider before max age due to that erosion.
