When I was riding across the country I stopped by a farm in Iowa as a teenager was hosing down her 4-H prize-winning young bull named Ace of Spades. (He was all black.). She told me she would probably have him slaughtered in a year or so. That made me sad.
4-H really is just for farm kids. When our kids were little, I think we went to one intro meeting. Basically, kids raise an animal or animals to sell, was how it worked. I think it may help beat the Disney aspect out of it.
I'd say the relationship between farmers and hunters on one hand, and meat animals on the other is more complex than people who aren't farmers or hunters generally understand.
