Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The noticeable lack of quality content will be rectified in about 5 hours when I become available. Until then, soldier on as best as you can.

I hate these things if only because they are relatively slow.

I keep reading threads where people talk about how to squeeze in the fattest possible tire, even to the point of having to deflate the tire to get it through the brakes. ATM, of my 11 road bikes, only one ISN'T running 25s, and with them at 85/90 or 90/95 (depending on inner rim width), for sure they're a touch harsher than the 28s on the Canyon at 80/85, but not hugely so. And all of them are WAY cushier than how I used to roll - 23s or 25s at 120 or higher. I wonder if people are chasing the impossible dream?

When we take our trip we are going to need a ride from the LA train station to the apartment in Koreatown. I am hoping we can take a Waymo self-driving rideshare. My hope is they are faster than this little guy.

I think 25 is fine, but all the cool kids think wider is better. It's human nature to seek "improvement" even if it is marginal gains and/or marketing.

Bikes: road, track, mtb

im finally on tubeless on my road bike and doing ~65 PSI on 28s and it is quite nice. before I was on TPU tubes on 25s running about 80 PSI. also I am old enough to remember running 23s and even 21s on 120 PSI. would mob that up rural broken pavement and fire roads/back roads in college BITD. I was young and dumb.

mtb is a different story of course

"Why, when I were a lad, we'd ride 21s pumped up to 140 psi, narrow saddles with no relief channel, and bar tape with no shock absorbing qualities at all! We'd seek out roads with old cracked asphalt, concrete roads with joints every 10 feet, and newly chipsealed pavement! And did we complain? NO! Because we kept our jaws clenched so we wouldn't bite our tongues!!!"

I did try 32s, but it turned out the rims were too narrow and they only inflated to 29mm. Not much difference between that and 28s.

Smaller volume tires are probably less horrible to you skin & bone folk, but for fat-asses like me, it's a bigly improvement. I started my road bike journey on 17mm wide rims and 23mm tires at 105+ psi. Moving from that to modern, wide rims and 28mm+ tubeless tires, running at ~65psi? Yeah, there's nothing marginal about that. SO much less fatigue, especially over the course of a long ride, from your body not being the primary shock absorber.

I went from 37 to 58 on the green machine. So plush but they added damn near a kilo to the bike mass

Maybe I'll splash out on a $180 pair of tyres of the Rene Herse/Ultradynamico/Simworks someday. Then maybe a $120 fork... gonna be the most expensive Walmart floor bike ever pretty soon.

Chin-up report: 2x4. Narrow stance. I might have another set in me but I don't wanna overdo it.

This morning I took Sheila or a nice long walk. 3.4 miles, to the park and back, along a trail that's long been one of my favorites for dogwalking, especially this time of year when it's all still green and lively. We're supposed to get >1" of rain this weekend, so the next couple weeks will be interesting. The Doomsayers will have to choose between, "The rain stopping so early means a Bad Fire Season!" and "Rain this late means a Bad Fire Season!"

What with one thing and another, I didn't have time to ride within the optimum window, and when I looked out the actual window, it was windy AF out there!! Like, gusting to 26 mph windy. I tried napping, but it seems like my lying down for a nap is a signal for Mrs. GJ and the dogs to wake up from THEIR nap and come and bug me. So I got my stuff on and went for a Zwift ride. Managed to level up, which isn't saying much since all you have to do is keep riding. But here's the pic anyway - Now I'm only 35 levels behind TMonk !

My nephew played the horn with his college orchestra this eve. Pretty good Rachmaninov performance on a non-starter piano.
