Regarding LSD specifically, most routes do utilize a natural fungal extract (ergotamine tartrate) but it is a reasonably involved organic synthesis with that starting point. So unlike other compounds that can be simply extracted, it could have some pharma interest.
Understood, but getting a patent on one of these may be a challenge and may not be worth investing millions in randomized clinical trials, when you are competing with psilocybin or other similar compounds that may be quite inexpensive.
Same thing goes for cannabis, btw.
