I used this service to ship my friend's (empty) bike carrier a few months ago. They partnered with UPS so I simply printed out the shipping label and dropped it off at UPS and it went smoothly. Not sure if something changed, or maybe I was lucky and/or you were unlucky.
We are going to Colorado in late July and I am taking my bike, will just pay the $80 each way fare and take the Habanero in the hard-shell case I have.
I flew internationally with multiple cardboard bike boxes, even before they were called regular luggage. Every time I went in prepared to pay whatever they asked. Every time I paid nothing. And almost every time I was flying out of IAD.
