I generally don't give a toss about the OS, I wasted far too much time in the 90s trying to sell VMS against UNIX when open systems were the fashion. These days the OS is just a commodity like the hardware, it's the application and what you can do with the information that gets the punters excited. At the desktop end of things Microsoft have just done a really good job of tying end-user tools in tightly with their OS so you "can't do without it".
I'm with you Willie, I'd rather be repairing bikes or doing landscaping, but doing network administration and Rdb and Oracle DBA work pays much better
