it's probably familiarity, as you say. i have some of those on my fix, and i rode them on a road bike up till about 6 months ago. i had to relearn trackstands, though, because i kept moving my feet while doing it. and, you know...can't really get away with that with clipless. but if you're still familiar enough with clipless, i'm sure it's an advantage. the power transfer is more immediate, all that jazz.
