Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Trackstanding Observation (or, viva le clipless!)...

Ok, so, I was riding my fixie on clips-n-straps. My roadie, on the other hand, has always had the super cool Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL clipless pedals (PD-6610). This weekend, I picked up a pair of the cheaper Shimano SPD-SL (PD-540) clipless pedals for my fixie.

Now it might just be my familiarity with my shoes and the way they fit the pedal -- maybe a totally mental thing -- or it might be a better connection to the drivetrain, but all of a sudden I can trackstand so much better! I'm still no trackstanding fool (like, I can't natty fab yet) but I'll be damned if I wasn't trackstanding for minutes at a time last night.

Tonight I'm giving the new pedals a run from Anaheim Stadium to HB and back via the SART.

it's probably familiarity, as you say. i have some of those on my fix, and i rode them on a road bike up till about 6 months ago. i had to relearn trackstands, though, because i kept moving my feet while doing it. and, you know...can't really get away with that with clipless. but if you're still familiar enough with clipless, i'm sure it's an advantage. the power transfer is more immediate, all that jazz.

They are indeed easy for me to do. I just started riding my road bike again and I thought I could not do Tstands on that bikes with brakes and gears. It was quite a joy when I first pulled it off on the gearie, realizing that is pretty much all about balance, not just the drivetrain being fixed.

i have eggbeaters, and its a lot easier to trackstand, because its easier to get out of them than straps. I'm more confidant, because I'm not afraid that I'll get stuck in them and fall over.

Always with worst with the "rat traps"... when you're trackstanding and then get stuck in a rut and you frantically try and get your feet out of the straps as you start to tip over to the side and then you either eat the pavement or roll your ankle and the people on the sidewalk start to laugh at you and the traffic starts to honk because your lyin' in the middle of the road while the traffic light is green then the cops start yelling at you because your all of a sudden lying there naked and they book you for your nakeness in public. Then you figure out that its all a dream. Am I the only one who's experienced this? mmmmmmmmmmmm... love it.

P.S.: congrats on the new found trackstanding ease.
