That's because the carbon cranks are 9 times out of 10 no lighter then Aluminium, and more than likely don't need to be thrown away after a crash.

For you and me though, they're 2-3 times more expensive, so I don't know why anyone bothers.

However......if I had the money, of all the carbon cranks I'd probably get the Zipps. OTOH, a freind of mine is making some lugged steel cranks, and knowing my fetish for steel cranks, I'll probably end up with them, weight be damned.
