I did the same thing. I got up over 205, after being 170-175 most of my life. That is when I bought my bike. I lost a lot of weight. I slipped a little over the winter but I am now back to approaching 180.
I think that the big problem is that a number of these people have been fat since childhood. So they look in the mirror and don't see anything wrong.
