The picture does not show the bike lanes to the airport. It shows the Hawthorne bridge sidewalk, which is wider than a car lane and is divided for cyclists and pedestrians. I ride it several times a week, and have never had a close call with a pedestrian. In fact, it is one of 3 or 4 main thoroughfares across the river into downtown that thousands upon thousands of bike commuters use everyday.

I grew up in Midland, Michigan, and ridden all over the country, and believe me, it is the closest thing to cycling nirvana for a larger city anywhere. San Diego, Davis CA, and Madison, WI, are right up there too.
