This is a interesting story about Portland, Oregon transit.

Good article. Portland is one of the few places in which I think I would enjoy living if I moved to the US.

very interesting... cycling for transit has increased a whopping 257 PERCENT in Portland in the last 10 years.... tongue in cheek.....I wonder if the bike lanes have anything to do with that?

Jeeze, they got SUV owners to give up their cars? Either they are:

1) Seriously living in an area where the transportation system really is as good as the article says it is
2) Paid
3) Made up

Sayeeda Warsi's film on public transport in Portland, Oregon will be show on Newsnight on BBC Two in the UK and on the Newsnight website at 2130GMT/2230BST on Tuesday 15 August.
Is anyone going to record that? I'd love to see it.

Bikes: who cares?

There's lots and lots of cyclists and transit riders in Portland; but believe me, the car is STILL king.

The pic in the article entitled, "Portland cyclists enjoy dedicated lanes - right out to the airport" shows cyclists sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Not my idea of cycling nirvana!

The picture does not show the bike lanes to the airport. It shows the Hawthorne bridge sidewalk, which is wider than a car lane and is divided for cyclists and pedestrians. I ride it several times a week, and have never had a close call with a pedestrian. In fact, it is one of 3 or 4 main thoroughfares across the river into downtown that thousands upon thousands of bike commuters use everyday.

I grew up in Midland, Michigan, and ridden all over the country, and believe me, it is the closest thing to cycling nirvana for a larger city anywhere. San Diego, Davis CA, and Madison, WI, are right up there too.
