I rode up Oak Glen, roughly 3600 ft of climbing in 90+ heat. Legs are knackered.

Just under 40 miles on the NCC Wednesday night hammer ride. It was a paceline of 6 for about, I'm guessing, 30 miles. Other than waiting for me after some climby stuff, I hung in there until the final sprint. Shovel says the ride was on the slower side. As the wheel behind him, I can confirm that this certainly was not the case when he went to the front. I huffed and puffed a bit tonight. Good ride, and good post-ride pizza!

Ow. Track race after missing 3 weeks of track really hurt. Had the choice of doing cat 3/4 or 1/2/3. Was feeling masochistic so went with 1/2/3. All races were "mystery" races tonight. Scratch race, unknown laps. Got a group of 4 otf at the first prime. Was hoping it was early enough that we'd be gifted a gap, but it didn't happen. Then I watched the winning break go. Win and out, unknown placing for each of 5 sprints. Felt good for the second sprint, half lap to go no one coming around yet so I sprint up the side and some dummy swerves all the way uptrack almost taking me out. Only choice was to squeeze on the side and hope for the next sprint but I was done. Point-a-lap was random points each lap. This one hurt bad and I blew up bridging to what looked like a split but it came together and I went off the back.

Longest lap was fun. Track stand between turn 4 and the line for a few minutes til there are a few left, then sprint a lap. Way overgeared for a standing start. 2 laps and I'd have had it lol!

super nice day, so what better time to suffer on some hills. It's a slow process, but I seem to be getting better each week, setting PR's here and there as far as time goes, as well as raw watts on the respective segments. the hills was preceded and proceeded with easy chill riding on the minuteman path

got a question: so if based on my ftp, the top of my vo2max zone is 300 using the Coggan zones, and I can exceed that for 3 minutes, does that mean my VO2Max is improving? Today, for example, I avg 317w, 324w, 308w, 309w over various 3 minute climb. I'm assuming that someone can sustain the top of their vo2 for 3 mins at a time, don't know if I'm off the mark with that or not

I believe that generally vo2 is considered the max you can put out for 5 minutes. For workouts I consider my vo2 zone what I can do when I do 5x5min. When in season I lower the target numbers so as to not be wrecked when the weekend comes around. When out of season I am allowed to go harder. 3min power should exceed vo2 power, that is normal. You also need to do a few vo2 workouts before you really know whether or not you conform to Coggan zones or if your actual vo2 power is above or below it.

Ah ok, I wasn't sure if it was 3 or 5 min power which represented the top end, good to know!

5 minutes is an approximation. 3 and 8 minutes could also be considered VO2 max intervals. Technically VO2 max power would be the power produced at maximum oxygen uptake. 5 minute power is not really the same thing, technically, as VO2 max in the physiological sense.

Yeah, I kind of thought there was some sort of correlation with interval length and wattage in Z5, 8 minute would potentially be the lower end of the zone and 3 min would be the upper end, so that's what prompted that question. Didn't know if things fit in that neatly or not

One more kind of related question, I've seen somewhere that NP isn't really a useful metric for short efforts, but for 5 mins hills with false flats, would NP be a better indicator of effort?

Just do the tests. 1 minute, 5 minute, 20 minute. Stop approximating.

Raining and windy outside so did a 2 and 1/2 hr of indoor spinning based on heart rate 140-150bpm with jumps to 170 every 10 minutes. Now I'm completely cooked but legs feel fine

The upper end is closer to 2 min (117 +/- 29 s) in experienced cyclists.

All of this correlation of training zones to energy systems is model-based. And, as they say, "all models are wrong, some are useful." The zones in the Coggan book (in any book) are based on a generic subject of per se "normal" physiology. All of which is a long-winded way of saying this:

You are a special snow flake and you are not going to perfectly match the Coggan model. So exceeding whatever the range of a training zone is on the Coggan chart might not tell you anything at all about YOU.

Recovery ride. Started watching archer. Not sure how I feel about it, doesn't match the hype after two episodes.

I took yesterday off - don't need to ramp too hard too fast. 1 Hr on Zwift today. 20' @ 85%, 20' @ 95%. Easier than the last time I tried. Need long rides this weekend.

I love Archer. I've seen every episode many many times at this point because I put it on to fall asleep. something about it is mindless and I can nod off within 10 minutes.
