Beware of Klingons on inline skates

Today as usual I went on the Saturday morning training ride/race in Miami. Group was 30+ guys (and girls). About a mile before the only climb on the ride, Alp De Rickenbacker Bridge, we overtake a guy on inline skates that obviously knows what he's doing. He keeps up with us easily with both arms behind his back (which shows he's only in cruise mode).

The pace picks up a little on the hill, but not much, pack is at 60-75%. At the crest, it speeds up, I'm completely spun out in a 52/13. About a mile past the bridge, we're going pretty fast, not strung out in a straight line, but moving since its a big group. I feel something funny and look at my rear wheel thinking I'
m flatting, and its the guy on inline skates, holding onto my seatpost! He lets go of me and goes from bike to bike hitching a ride. Every once in a while, he skates a few strokes.

This guy kept up with the pack on the uphill, on a pretty fast descent and on the flats, on skates. I was duly impressed. Don't know who this guy was, but we do have a few olympic speed skaters down here.

Thats not cool...

I'd be pretty displeased if someone did that without asking first.

yep. know the feeling. i once 'marshalled' an inline skating race in central park. i thought it's be pretty easy, riding a decent tempo, but those SOBs can fly!

btw - how fast were you going when you were spinning out at 52x13? 40+ MPH?

Yeah, we were moving, probably closer to 50 mph (can't say for sure cause I'm a retro grouch and "I don't need no stinkin" speedometer. Is a speedo going to tell me if I'm off the front or getting dropped or if I'm working hard?), But I digress.

I didn't see the guy on the descent because he was in back of me, but you gotta have major cojones to descend that fast on skates.

To Dead Roman- Hey, didn't bother me, didn't bother anyone else he was clinging on to. The guy knew what he was doing, besides, I'm so used to jostling and pushing in a big field that this was really no big deal.

Bless me, I really thought I was going to be reading about somebody dressed as a Klingon wearing skates!

Hey, I live in the Portland area. I'm surprised I haven't seen such myself.

No brakes. entry level skates have these wimpy skid pads but any serious equipment doesn't have brakes. I bet this guys skates cost as much as an entry level, good quality road bike.

Foot brake. Much like brakeless fixies, just because you can't see a braking system, doesn't mean they don't have a way to stop.
