What does it mean when I can't get it up?

My heart rate, that is. I did my own personal TT yesterday on the course the local club uses, and was having a really hard time keeping my heart rate up. I did a good time (for me); I felt like I was exerting myself; I was breathing hard, deep, and regular; my legs had a constant but not excessive burn (until the final mile or so); but all of this was at a HR that was as much as 10 or 12bpm lower compared to what I normally see. Any time I tried to spin a little faster or push the pace a bit to get my HR up I started to feel winded and weak. What do you make of this? Is this normal - just a fluctuation that happens time to time, or does it mean something?

usually, when you cant get get your heart down (unusually high resting HR) or you cant get it to go into its upper limits...

both are signs youre too tired/stressed. may not be all bike related. might be job/family/real-life unduced too.

Train your perceived exertion and use that in conjunction with the HRM to determine how you're doing. HRM alone will mislead you sometimes.

OK Pcad, you need to sit down for me to explain this. Are you seated? Now stay there for a while and relax.
You are now in recovery mode.

one day a week don't do any exercise. limit the amount of time you go up and down the stairs. if you have sex it should be your wife doing all the work. if you can get someone to feed you that would be helpful.

one week a month cut your exercise volume to about 1/2 of normal and don't do any intensity work. It should all be bottom zone heart rate stuff.

To further complicate things, my HR will run low after i've been off the bike for a few days as well.

I prefer 3 weeks on, 1 week off. But on the off week I don't cut out intensity, just junk miles.

It's when all your bikes are broken at the same time.

Either, 1) you're under rested, as suggested, or 2) you're not pushing yourself hard enough.

Problem is that the answer to the problem involves polar opposites depending on whether its 1 or 2.

So you have to learn to figure out when to rest and when to HTFU.
