I read all of the back and forth banter about the sprint speed, etc. Hey, it was fast enough and that is all that matters.
I have a funny story about gears and speed and cadence. A couple of months ago I was on a team ride and one guy was off the front as we were a couple of miles from one of our sprint points. We decided to let him stay away and then try and swarm him at the last second. Anyway with about 2 miles to go he accelerates and we have to ramp it up. I get to the front and I start winding it up trying to time the catch. I look down and I see we are going 32 mph and pretty soon we catch him just in time.
Right after this sprint is our usual country store stop and one of my teammates looks at my bike and asks "Were you in the small ring back there?" Doh! We had done some dirt road riding earlier where I like to put it in the small ring and spin and I never shifted back. It never dawned on me that I was chasing in a 39x14 gear seated the whole way.

met rydaddy at the winters e4 crit. He's a nice guy and strong rider.
~45 person field, 6 corners LLLRLL, field would string out, but we slowed dramatically around 4 to go. I moved up before we hit the gas for the final ramp-up. Was about 8 back at the "R" corner (30 seconds to finish), when :
a rider had gone wide in the previous left, up on the curb and into the grass. he decided to REJOIN THE FIELD 20 FEET FROM THE CORNER MOVING THE WRONG SPEED AND DIRECTION. He'd dropped speed (obviously) and we were going 28 (ptap data), lots of hard braking and general ****ed-up-ed-ness. ****. I missed having my front wheel swept HARD by about 2 inches. Maybe less. I should have gone down. This checked my speed to 20, and I hit the gas from there but had completely lost all my positioning and came across the line right next to rydaddy, who I guess was pretty close to right behind me and had been forced out hard as well.
Was happy with my racing, and not crashing (it's getting old typing that). Was planning on doing the modesto RR tomorrow, but I've come home and literally fallen asleep for a couple of hours unintentionally two days in a row now. Another 5am morning might put me in a pretty big hole for the coming week. I may just do an hour of recovery riding, as I'm not pre-reged anyway.

Fun race though. I hope it becomes a regular.

Cat 3:
Pure madness. Morons galore. Seemingly perfect position in last two turned into worse possible position in last two turns. Could have sprinted for top 15, chose to not partake in the likely carnage. Carnage aside, I screwed myself. Much to learn still.

Smooth as butter. 27mph. 27 laps sooo that's 54 drag races. I uhh, tailgunned it. Or something.

Hi,
Flatted about 1 mile into our 23 mile district championship ITT. In all of the TTs that I have ever done, I believe that this is the first mechanical that I have ever suffered.

Modesto Crit M123. A group of 8 or so gets away about half way through the race. No real chase to speak of. So much so that with 8 laps to go, the chase group is about to get lapped so they give us 2 to go, and we finish while the break rides 6 more laps. I've never had that happen before. I think I came in second in the field sprint. Whoop de frickin' doo.
On the positives, Lucas took 2d in the 6 year-olds field, despite being on 16 inch wheels. That kid really deserves a new bike.

poolesville RR. P123. 7 laps, 72 miles, includes 1.5 mi. gravel section, lots of short rollers including a couple that are steepish, and has sections on a ridge with open fields so susceptible to lots of wind. 75 starters, race of attrition. very hard and somewhat confusing race. our field was neutralized at one point as we were overtaking another field on course (the circuit ends w a right turn each lap but on the finishing lap, the field turns to the left to the finish line. the field we were overtaking was turning left so the officials instructed us to soft pedal neutral through a feed zone until we turned right. the instructions were not well communicated and I honestly didnt know we were under neutral, I thought we were slowing for the feedzone until told otherwise by a team mate). when we were neutral, I thought there were 3 guys up the road, but apparently they were back with us. BUT, 4 guys attacked when we were under neutral. The officials let them go, next lap there was a crash on the gravel section at the front of the main chase that slowed the field down to a standstill. This sealed the deal on the success of the 4 guys up the road. Then it was single file, attack, bunch, single file, attack, etc. for the remaining 18 miles. a group of 3 got away, another group of 3 chased them, then the main chase of which I was a part of. I was suffering and in my mind there were 10 guys up the road, so I mailed in the field sprint in the name of safety and cramping legs. Found out later that the 4 guys who attacked when we were under neutral were all DQd, including a guy who attacked that 4-some and soloed about 10 miles for the apparent win. I dont think they knew we were under neutral as it wasnt very clearly communicated, and I'm not sure why the officials didnt just moto up and bring them back instead of dedicating moto ref resources to them.
In the end, our field sprint was for 7th, payout was to 10, so I should have grinded a little more. honestly i should have dug deeper and gone with one of the groups of 3 that split off. I ended up 16th. only 30 finished and 4 of those were DQd. It was a very demanding day in the saddle. Once again, a non-result finish, but a confidence boost that I can manage in a very hard race that has lots of attrition. Now, I need to be a little more assertive and have more confidence in my legs to respond.
This jump from Cat 3 to Cat 2 might be pretty easy for some, but for me, it's like learning to race all over again. Pack fodder and having a good time doing it

Well guys... I did it, first win today. Houston Grand Criterium. It was on a very long, non-technical course, more of a circuit races. 50 minutes for the C4s. I convinced myself to sit in. I sat near the front the entire race and avoided the 3 crashes which occured. On the final straight run in to the finish I jumped @ 1.2 km to go, averaged 30.0 mph for 1:33 to the finish.
I figured at that distance, if I jumped hard, everyone would hesitate - they did. One guy responded about 4 seconds too late to grab my wheel, and another about 4 seconds after the 2nd dude. They ended up 2nd and 3rd.
Unfortunately no power data, as I was using my aero wheels. no prize money, i got a useless gift certificate for a shop I'll never visit.. Can't ask for everything.

Congrats JB!
I did the Ninigret Mystic Velo Crit today. Cool course, it is a dedicated bike course. Pancake flat with more corners than any of the other crits I've done thus far (which isn't saying much...). I tailgunned the 4 race and the accordion effect in and out of corners and the wind killed me. By the time I realized what was happening and that I should get towards the front I was so fried that moving up wasn't really an option. I lasted about 25' and then dropped out. Sucked, but it's life. My only other teammate in the race (Lance) rode very strong, but decided to pull the last 10 laps of the race while everyone sat on his wheel. He didn't contest for the sprint, but I would love to see what he could have done if he could have stayed away in a break or sat in for the race and then killed the sprint.
I had one short race after the 4s and then had to line up for the juniors. There were a lot of strong juniors there (not sure which team they are on, but their kits are blue and yellow...) who didn't do the juniors race (I think most of them did the 3s instead), so I was kind of happy about that as it meant the race wouldn't be a total sufferfest. The pace was slow for the first couple laps, I tried a few little attacks, but didn't have the jump to get any separation. I messed up on the sprint and a couple of kids gapped me pretty good, but I ended up 4th. Some kid from Target Training pulled almost the whole race and then one the sprint, he is very strong. I think Mystic Velo got 2nd and I'm not sure about 3rd. I felt better about this race. It wasn't nearly as fast as the 4s, but I got to have a little fun trying to attack and stuff, and I felt decent on the sprint.
All in all, a fun day.

Iowa State Fair Crit - Cat 5
I came down with tonsilitis last Monday so I wasn't really able to ride all week. Still felt a little crappy today, but good enough to race. The course was actually hilly which was pretty surprising for being in the middle of Iowa. Due to the steep hill I figured I would attack right off the bat because 1) it would spread the field out and 2) there were some pretty tight corners after the downhill so I wanted to be in front for those. I was about 8th wheel when we hit the hill, so I stood up and started hitting it hard. My plan worked and only one guy was able to keep up. I was able to keep a pretty high pace for a few laps, but eventually had to let up a bit. I won the first prime lap then ended up taking 4th overall. Later I found out that the guy that stuck with me when I attacked right away was a professional triathlete so I don't feel to bad about getting beat by him.

Deer trail p/1/2: flatted out of the lead group after spending 60 minutes at nearly 5w/kg in the rotation in some pretty nasty wind. Gap was 1:40 when I flatted. Wheel car was behind the main field so I got screwed. Chased for about 30 min in the wind before realizing it was fruitless and calling it quits.
