so I guess I did better than last year's Applefest. Same score (6th in Masters), but my time was actually faster than the winner's time last year. The pace was unreal for the first half of the race and I lasted until the second KOM this time. Just didn't have enough fitness to close the gap at the top of the hill. I'm not sure what my overall score was (Applefest runs all cats at the same time except for 5s, 4 women and 60+, so it's essentially a P1234/Masters race, hence the ridiculous speed)
Add to that the $400 prize to the one who breaks the course record set by Mike Jones the year before he turned pro with Healthnet. They missed it by one minute this year. I was about 5 minutes off the record.
One woman stayed up there. She was "sandbagging" in the P123 mens field. Yeah, I know, how is that possible.
I was on her wheel for a fair amount of the first half of the race. Her quads were enormous. In fact I sort of remembered them from Thater last year. I took a closer look. It was Laura Van Gilder
Talked to her for a bit after the race. Nice woman. She is wrapping up the road season and going right into cross soon.
So I'm not really "pleased" with my result, but I am clearly making steps in the right direction. Just need a bit more fitness and maybe I can find a way to win one of these someday.

I raced. The 39 mile road race stayed together. I was pack fodder so I sat up and let the the guys sprinting for 40th place have at it.

^congrats fordfasterr! Keep your nose to the grind stone. It only gets more difficult.
State RR championships. 25.5 mph average for 40 miles and it the pace felt easy. 10 mile loop, 1 mile of climbing. I sat in, pulled, chased some and chatted a lot. Pushed the pace really hard for ~300m after getting half way up the climb to the finish. I thought I may be able to hold on and really crush the last 3-400 and get the win or podium. Well, I held that pace 'till the final 200-300m and exploded. My buddy came around me but didn't have much left.
Pack finish. But it was a decent race, though I didn't expend my energy correctly. Got a bit more to learn.
Another guy I ride with every now and then won the P1/2 jersey (3rd in the race). Good for him. Nice guy and has had a tough season. He averaged more than 12 w/kg for the final 30 seconds of the uphill sprint after 35 miles in a break. I've got some more work to do.

I had a spectacular solo break today. Perfect execution of attacking the catch of a previous break attempt by a couple other people. I was really surprised no one chased right away and also that no one went with me because I came up the left from the back in fairly obvious fashion. I thought I went off on 3 to go, but I'm told it may have been 4 (I was too busy staring at my HRM reading 190bpm to look at the lap counter). Didn't even know I won a prime (don't remember the bell). Got caught before the final turn. d'oh. I would've preferred a later attack, but the opporunity presented itself, so I went for it.
Raced in the Open race later in the day for kicks. Pack fodder, which was the goal.

Cool line photo, congrats on 3rd! I guess the orange stripes at the bottom come from one of those roll-up plastic fences?
You know, it's easy to say here, but it looks like a big throw could have gotten you second...

I will have to work on that.
FYI, the guy who got 1st (in the pic) drafted me right up to the line and then sped up something wicked (over 40 mph) to pass me for the win... crazy.

I raced twice yesterday, last 2 races of the year unless something pops up.
Bobby Phillips Turkey Day race, traditional MABRA season ender.
I've totally not been training for anything other than pie eating or beer drinking contests so my expectations were nothing beyond having fun.
M35+ race, small but stacked field. I was pretty aggressive and tried to get away. Not doing much training, I lacked "pop". If something went, and I wasnt right on the wheel, I ended up missing the draft and had to bridge. I spent alot of time bridging. When I wasnt bridging, I was counterattacking when guys were reeled in. Race was single file the whole time and despite alot of aggressive riding was together at the end. I had my team mate who's a very strong sprinter (he won the Cat 3/4 race earlier in the day) on my wheel last lap, and a former team mate was on his wheel. I gave a really good leadout but my team mate lost my wheel, however my former team mate was on it ... and he won the race.
123 race, I was spent from the M35+ and was total pack fodder. I was cramping from my toes to my triceps and even though a pretty civil pace, I was hanging on. Glad for a big field, lots of places to hide. I made one dig somewhere in the middle of the race, but it didnt even last a mile before I was absorbed by the group - more me going backward than anything else.
All in all, 50 miles of industrial park crit racing on a beautiful sunday afternoon, with my wife and daughter watching. Fun day. Downside is my wife and daughter left the car door open and our battery was dead when we tried to leave. Getting a jump start from a bunch of racers proved more difficult than I would have thought, but fortunately that former team mate that won the M35+ race was able to hook me up. Kharma baby, Kharma.

^^ ouch. Didn't see you out there stranded after the 123. But then, I don't have jumper cables, nor do I know if there's a trick to giving a jump with a hybrid...guess I should figure that out.

Long newb season recap skip if needed.
So this year was my "recon" year where I was gonna try a few races and see how it went, with the intent of training over the winter and really racing next year.
My plan fell somewhat short as my first race ever ended in 3 minutes and 20 seconds as I crashed in the first 90* turn. Someone swerved into me, but I am not a very self assured person in the first place, so I took it as a pretty big hit to my already shaky confidence.
A week later I twist my ankle really bad and don't ride for the rest of April, may and June ( I also got married and buy a house which ate into riding time). I finally get back on the bike in late June and enter another race well before I am back up to fitness. This ends with me getting dropped off after about 7-8 miles and pulled after 10.5 in an 18 mile crit. I was with a group of 4 and ended up 39th of 42 as other dropped off before we did. It was pretty disappointing as the pack slowed after we were off the back and we never really lost sight of them, but they knew how to put the gas on in the beginning to lose people like me (Not sure why we were pulled. I don't think they would have lapped us).
So after this I was getting settled into my new house went on vacation and finally started riding the way I wanted 80-110 miles a week 1-2 fast group rides a week etc. I had a really good ride with 2 other guys on wed. (the group met 30 min earlier and the three of us didn't get the memo) where it was just fast and smooth and one of the guys mentioned doing the race this Sunday, so I went ahead and did it.
Mixed cat 4/5 field with prize money (seems to pull out the faster 4s). I was pretty eager and the first lap (6.3 mile laps road raceish with lead and follow vehicles and motorcycles on the sides) I was chasing attacks and on the front for a few miles and keeping in the top 15 positions. The first lap was really fast for me, mostly in the 26-27 range, but I felt great and had fun with it. After the first lat and a half I started thinking I might actually finish this thing and I better play it a bit more conservatively (it was a 38 mile race) So I hung in the pack and flew around till 2 laps too go. I started moving back up and by the last half lap I was in the top 20 positions.
The intermediate laps seemed pretty slow, and this was a tactical mistake from the larger teams I would assume, as almost all of the over 50 starters were still there with 1 km to go. It started ramping up really fast at that point, but I was in a decent position and keeping up and passing people (over 30). There was a very gentle "S" in the road about ~150m out from the line and just as I was about stand to try to sprint and gain some positions I was bumped from the right in the middle of the field. The guy didn't recover but fell down. Since almost everyone was still with us and this was in the top 15 or so people there was quite a domino effect as people were flying up the sides and the people in the middle suddenly cut to the sides. One guy was taken to the hospital. And I knew it was stupid but I sat up and took a quick look back (I felt bad the guy went down, but didn't think it was my fault as he was behind me and moved into me) I didn't know if it was bad form to still charge for the line, but some of the people near me did. I ended up 16th of 50+ people, which really makes me hopeful for next year (not to mention that I am 215lbs and plan to be quite a bit lighter for next season). All in all I kept the rubber down when I was bumped twice and felt really good about the race (avg 24.4 mph for 37.5 miles dead flat 4 corners 3 wet wooden bridges [almost ate it on one of these])
sorry for the long story but lurking in "Road Racing" has definitely been and inspiration for me and I certainly feel like I will continue next season, I also feel like I can beat some of these guys so I may not be trapped as a 4/5 forever. Thanks for all the useful advice around here.

My race report continues to include some of the worst DOMS of the season... in both soleus muscles, specifically. ouch

Local season series over...
Ran the local "B" crit and TT just about every week - fun, challenging, social, and ...challenging!
Enjoyed some improvement in all areas, 28:44 to 26:26 in 10 TT, 1:17+ to 1:10:09 in 25 TT
In the crit (quite a mixed bag there, the "As" sometimes stay together, are faster, of course, and smooth, skilled, safe(r), however, the Bs range from overlapping the As in ability to cruiser bikes) from dropped almost right away to hanging in there and occasional top 6 finish... Last night a formerly dominant "B" who went "A" dropped back to the Bs to toy around, driving the pace up. I fell off at about 15 mins, TTd it until catching back on to the lead group with about 6 mins to go, and held on for 6th, 24.1mph avg over 45 mins + 3 laps.
Rubber side down all season, looking forward to next! Still more to learn, sure... safety first though!
Most've you have seen a great deal of what I still find very hard to believe...

Nice job on staying upright! Sounds like you're on track for next season.
I think I'd charge for the line in that case too. Even if you caused the crash somehow you can always sort that out after the race.
I try not to look back at carnage (even as enticing as the sounds are), for fear of swerving and causing more wrecks. The way I see it is if I'm not in the wreck then it's time to keep going forward.

3rd place @ Zmotion criterium - Tradewinds park.
I managed a solo break with 2 laps to go, never caught the 2 leaders but I sailed into 3rd place alone. YEAH!
This was not an official race, no points counted towards my license. Still, I got to mix it up with some cat 3's ( I don't know if there were any higher cat people in there but from what I saw at least one or two of them had to be in the higher cats )..
