No doubt. I was in Ghent and the locals were explaining why the Spanish were tools 500 years ago; I was in Amsterdam and the locals corrected my pronunciation so that I wouldn't sound German.

I think it was the number 3 that was particularly drawing comment. My colleagues were trying to teach me how to say "two of this" or "three of that." A very nice gentleman leaned in and said (with a smile) "you don't speak German in Holland" and then taught me how to say it correctly. Later, when I would self-correct, merchants would always smile and nod their heads when I got it right.

I'm sure a fair bit of this was simply Dutch pride and not "we hate Germans," but they seemed quite happy that the distinction be kept.

Guess I shouldn't go to Holland. Knowing a bit of german, I can interpret the written language pretty well.

On the other hand my German pronunciation is embarrassing, so maybe it's how you're actually supposed to say things in Dutch.
