Hello everyone, this is an excellent forum. I'm new to riding and have an old 1986 Raleigh Grand Prix it's a 12 speed. I bought this bike years ago and never really rode it. The question I have is should I keep this bike and ride it as is, keep frame and change components or just buy a new road bike. I plan on doing distance riding. The reason I'm asking is I realize my bike is dated and don't know if the newer bike technology is that much of a difference. Most of my riding will be in the Bronx, NY. Thanking everyone in advance.

Just take it in for a tune-up, then ride it while you get into better shape, get used to being on long rides and you'll get a better feel for how the bike fits and what you do and don't like about it.
As long as it's mechanically sound, it's a fine bike for just riding. Lots of races and centuries have been finished on bikes like that.

Thank you all for the great advice. I'm going to ride the bike as is. If I stick with it and enjoy riding I will upgrade to a newer bike. Thanks again, this is an awesome forum.
