Spawn2 ("rising" HS soph) is taking a Python programming course on-line this Summer/Fall via a "virtual school". In the next assignment he has to come up with a project to do and then do it. They have hardly learned anything, so I guess the expectation is to make modifications to previous assignments. He didn't want to do that, so we went round-and-round about what he might do. We settled on a simple substitution cipher coder/decoder, i.e. "decoder ring" cipher. He doesn't know len(string) and looping, so it might be a little ugly with the coding without a little help. Then again at this point in his development a simple character for character coder/decoder might be enough. In any event he will have to get approval from his instructor.

in the five days since i got my new laptop, i have:
-deleted windows 7 home, reinstall windows 7 64-bit professional
-installed ubuntu 11.04, only to somehow mess up the windows boot record and lose windows
-wipe down all of the HD partitions, somehow have my computer recognize the HD again, reinstall windows 7
-shuffled the remaining parts of HD, install ubuntu again
-realized that i was under-utilizing my memory with a 32-bit ubuntu and that i didn't like Ubuntu Unity, so wipe again to install 10.04 64-bit
-realized that 10.04 doesn't support my display (max of 1028x764 when it can do 1366x728), insnstall 11.04 64 bit
-finally, after all this, i found out that my wireless doesn't work. took another few hours to get the correct drivers
Who knows how many hours i've spent on it...

Dual-boot is kind of passe' in this era of virtualization, but I've always let grub handle the boot sector chores. That would mean installing Linux first, then Windows.
If I were you I would install 11.04 (or whatever flavor of Linux you like that supports KVM) and install Windows as a 64 bit guest.

On the geek side last night I soldered in a battery into my backup SRM spider. The primary spider is now sitting on the bench, should be good to go shortly (since I have a new battery, solder, iron, light, voltmeter, liquid electrical tape, a couple tools, skinny screwdriver, etc all in one place). Tonight I'll test.
I used Carbon Copy to upgrade my 150GB Mac drive to 500GB. I still have twin 1.5 TB backup drives for it, although my video editing lives on those drives (about 500 GB still avail).
I now have a regular size 1 TB backup drive in my large (holds 2 drives) HP laptop. Next mission - ghost the 100GB primary drive onto a 500 GB drive and install. This laptop has an external 2 TB backup drive, but so far everything still fits on the 1 TB (about 500 GB data total).
We finally used HDMI out with the Dell laptop. Wow. Have to get a longer cable so we can use the TV as a monitor without typing on the floor in front of said TV.
Antec and HP2 desktops await internal transplants. Bought stuff for them, it's just sitting around right now. Then clear up some redundant backups, then relax for a year or three.

Does ACC not open at all? If it does, does it list your monitor by brand and model? It sounds like it's running in native resoultion (which is higher than 1080p).
If not, can you get to it through the windows screen settings? How does the device manager list your monitor?

I ran windows update to make sure that it wasn't something there, but that updated just fine.
No idea what's going on. So sad

got invited, tried it out a bit. Seems a lot like FB but i haven't used it much as there's almost no one on there (plus I barely have time for FB, Twitter, and my blog let alone another site).
I think Google is a little late to the part and won't become really popular unless FB does something that really pisses off their members...there's not much incentive right now to migrate over to another platform when you have an established one that works for the most part. The facebook picture not loading thing still irritates me so much though.

The whole limited invite thing seems to have created a buzz.
FB do something to piss of it's members? Never.

A lot of people are on the google 'cloud', so integrating email/chat/voice/pictures/etc, should be pretty seamless for G+ if it picks up.
I have a lot of friends that are using it a bunch. I'm mostly ambivalent, but I like the interface.
It sure ain't no google wave though.

I guess it looks like "cdr" as in you, but it's really a keyword in the lisp/scheme langauge - "car" gives you the first element in a list, "cdr" gives you the last one. It's a really strange language. =]

G+ seems pretty cool. I have a small collection of real friends on there, who I actually interact with normally anyway.
Circles are very useful.
Also, my Android phone automatically sends any photo I take up to G+, but initially not visible by any of my circles. It's really easy to share from there, and it's just generally a nice auto archive (though lower res).

Android phone question:
When setting up my new phone I allowed it to link with my FB account and now my phone contacts list is crammed full of old high school classmates I really don't want to call on the phone. I can't seem to delete those contacts either. Is there any way to get rid of all the facebook people?

caloso, you may be able to delete the facebook acct. try this:
from your home screen, click the menu button > Settings > accounts > if your FB acct. is there in the list, long press on it and it may give you an option to remove the account. if you added the FB contacts through the Facebook application, you might be able to delete the application and (hopefully) have it pull out all of the added contacts.
if neither of those work, you might check with the forums at https://www.androidcentral.com -- the forum regulars are pretty helpful (YMMV).
