A bunch of selfie drones flying over a moving peloton. What could possibly go wrong with that!

The drones are pretty fun toys, but have some practical uses, too. My brother operates one as part of a his County's Search and Rescue group. Great for training and pre-scouting areas with challenging terrain. Send the drone up with camera that shoots video back to a laptop in the van. Dispatch staff accordingly.

Those things are fun to fly, but easy to get out of control and land in a tree... good thing I was just flying a cheap one!
I hope anyone trying to fly them above a peloton knows wtf they're doing. USAC should probably ban them to be honest.

There is a guy that does aerial video during some races up this way. Not sure if he gets down to the bay area though. While the video is cool, I'd hate to see that thing come down in the middle of the pack.

Someone in the pro race at Redlands two years ago nailed a drone with his helmet. I think it was somewhat intentional, since he beelined right at it. Regardless if the thing went down it (he knicked the landing leg) could have caused a pileup. It was only a matter of time since the pilot was launching it in the middle of the road when the pack was almost right on it.

I'd rather see the selfie stuff banned outright and operators allowed by USAC discretion.

I am tempted. They had one flying the 805 criterium last year. I thought it was very cool and a matter of time before one landed in the pack. Just like last week one crashed with a bunch of meth - so if the Drug-Lords can't keep thousands of $ of meth in the air, why should we expect there won't be a bike accident. I don't want to be *that guy*.

Short video of the P123 at the formally called Mothballs - 1st Annual Carlos Soto Memorial Criterium finish on Sunday in Goleta. This used to be the 1st race of the season. Not so much anymore. 75 min race and one of the less exciting ones. Lots of solo 2-3 person breaks. One 8-9 person that got about 50 yards ahead and then swallowed. Lap time was in the 1:05 min to 1:10 range average speed 27.7. Reports were the 17-18 and 45+ were doing closer to 30mph.

From last year, I never posted it, I guess I forgot. This is why I couldn't find @grolby the clip when I looked for it whenever ago. I have two more from Bethel, the last two races there (meaning forever, based on the fact that the Series can't be held there any more), will be publishing them shortly.

Oops. I don't know why I didn't point you out. I know grolby and I spoke right after the race, and I also thought he raced with me at the track (he didn't, as it ends up).

I just re-watched that bit, you slotted in well based on what I did. That was a fun sprint.

I feel bad anyway. It was definitely a miserable day, like all but one at Bethel in 2014. Bonechilling.

Another clip, this from April 6, 2014, Circuit Francis J Clarke. Field sprint for me (of course). There was a break and a chase. I thought there were about 10 in the break, another 5 in the chase, and I got maybe 6th in a really jumbled stuttering sprint (I never jumped), so I figured I got 21st or something. Ends up the break was 3 and not 10, the chase was 1 and not 5, and I got 5th in the field so I got 9th in the race.

I dig the aerial shots and was tempted to try it but I have enough to handle with 6 cameras and a skateboard. Also, the flight time is short and the risk crashing is too great imo. Cool every time I see it though.
