Yeah, it's pretty cool. Really sweet vaulted ceilings, real hardwood (click-type, but still not laminate), real tile, real granite, real marble. Nice 2 car garage with some built in work benches and such, nice deck, nice yard. Separate MB on the ground floor.
It needs some work, but it's all doable. We're planning to replace the carpet in the dining room with hardwood, replace the ugly carpet downstairs with some nicer stuff, fix the drywall seams from settling, paint the whole house (it's original paint, and just has lots of nicks and scuffs), and stain the deck. There's also a problem with the way they laid the hardwood. They apparently did it themselves, and didn't do the best job. Instead of laying the hardwood under the base molding, and then putting the molding back down, and then putting the thresholds up to the base molding, they cut the base molding and put the threshold all the way to the wall, so it looks like crap. They also left some places you can see the subflooring. So we're gonna redo those places.

Teammate came over tonight to borrow my geared CX bike. It's a bit too big for me and I've never really connected with it. I told him to keep it as long as he wants and if it fits him to make me an offer.

Two new computers to transfer files and email over.
One old computer to back up, format, add memory, install new 64 bit OS.
Three computers to update software
One computer to figure out why the msocee.dll won't update with new Net Framework 4.0
One new dual-band N router to add and rewire to center of office.
Six new adapters to add.
One new multi-functional, extremely expensive, color printer to add to network.
If this all goes smoothly, I should be out of here in ... oooooh .... next time Halley's Comet comes around.

Well the war on education is about to heat up in the 'duh..
Our great governor's office has been on a public campaign against higher ed for the past month by playing up the "ivory tower of academia is unlike the working man" card in local media and press. Last night I heard from a very reliable source that our campus administration has been told to prepare for an additional $50-60 million budget cut next year. That would be drastic state budget cuts during six out of the seven years. FWIW, a full year's worth of tuition at our "flagship university" is less than $6k annually, and we're not allowed to raise tuition more than 15% annually, and even then we can only raise tuition until we reach the national average (around $8200).
On the positive side, if the state keeps cutting us like this, in two more years they can't threaten us with withholding our budget, because there will be no more state money coming in to this place. They should just cut us loose now, let us set our own rates, and leave us alone.
Oh, and the nanny filtering *** thing is just ass. What if you were a Terps fan?

kensuf and mollusk,
Did you know 14% of an average state's budget is spent on public universities?
Every state dollar appropriated to the University of Florida results in a $15 return on investment. Nice work boys.
Budget cuts should be coming from health care.
We promote excess in everything, then subsidize the care of smokers, the obese, daredevils, diabetic candy eaters, drug/alcohol abusers, over stressed employees, etc........

Must be nice to be perfectly healthy and strong.
Unfortunately perfectly healthy, strong people often come down with tragic illnesses as well, some without the means to take care of it.
I blame it on genetics.

There's genetics, then there's self destructive behavior which genetics can't always overcome.

I figure flipping can increase the value of a single-family home, but that's more of a contracting business investment than a real estate investment.

I'm a bleeding heart libby when it comes to helping out those in need.
But when the needy are playing with fire, then my help becomes slander.
I blame our society for many peoples ills.
Promoting bad eating habits, bad lifestyle choices, bad stress levels.
Crappy genetics can often be overcome in a more natural environment.
Modern living is a big slap in the face to our health.

^^ agreed.
As for the $15 to $1 return, that's not the ROI the governor's looking for. He's looking for the ROI on the $70 million he spent out of his own pocket to be our state's CEO...

Want to talk about food? Look at the distances to a grocery store in poor neighborhoods vs rich ones, esp in cities as opposed to proximity to fast food type places.
We're selling contracts in schools to people like coca cola and pepsi co. They have a duty to their shareholders. The kids drinking soda and eating a snickers for lunch every day just increases their bottom line. And I don't really blame the districts. They've had so much funding cut that they need it to function. They're doing the best they can. Sadly, it's far from good enough, even for gov't work.
The people supposed to be helping make decisions to guide people to make good choices have their hands in someone else's pockets. At the end of the day, it's easier to blame the individual because you can see someone buying a candy bar while the rest stays more hidden.
Self destructive behavior is another thing. Keep cutting funding and social support structures for those that need it just vanishes.
Fact is we've got to look in a mirror and ask ourselves as country if we're okay with this direction. The sheep just keep eating the tainted grass they're being fed.

For instance, what happens if a 50 y/o truck driver has a massive stroke, likely due to really high cholesterol levels?
We all agree that constant McDonalds didn't help, but it is darn cheap and relatively tasty.
So the truck driver comes into the hospital, deficits out of the wazoo, unable to work. The hospital's actions are either 6 weeks of intense rehab so he will be able to take care of himself, a nursing home (who do not take the uninsured*), or have his family provide 24/7 assist.
What does that do to the family and society? If we don't provide the expensive rehab he will be a burden of care on his family, likely meaning that someone will have to quit work to be a dedicated caregiver.
If we don't provide the outpatient rehab, following the inpatient stay he may never return to productive work (likely not driving though...).
So we either provide years of expensive medical care so he can return to be a productive member of society and less of a financial burden on the family - or we deny medical care and tank the family financially as they try to care for their loved one.
Not saying you are wrong per se, I just think its way too complicated to fix health care with more funding vs cut the funding. Imo, the purpose of health care (according to the govt) is to save money by keeping the largest number of people as productive tax payers. Whether that be decreased family burden of care or getting someone back in shape to return to work.
*since nursing homes do not take uninsured, the hospital system will start medicaid pending as soon as they anticipate a need for either 1) a secondary insurance or 2) the need for a primary insurance to meet hospital/nursing home costs.
And for those who don't know, Medicaid is a state run program (with federal dollars trickling in here and there).
I suppose I believe we are screwed if we do and screwed if we don't.

OKay, I'm thinking about going semi-vegetarian (maybe keep chicken but definitively drop red meat). I am also thinking about lowering the amount of sweets i eat, it's getting out of hand.
So basically can BF give me a nice Pros/Cons of being a semi-vegetarian?
edit: Also does anyone have any tips for transitioning over to being a vegetarian? It's going to be rough because right now basically all i eat is red meat and candy.

What others have said are true. Learn how to cook a couple of key meals and figure out how to use key ingredients. Eat and cook with fresh veggies and grains and avoid processed foods if you can. It's all about being disciplined and prepared in the beginning. After that it's all routine.

I wasn't looking to pick a fight/open up a can of worms (oops...), it's just that someone close to me, namely my gf (also a competitive cyclist) developed a very serious but treatable illness with little means to afford medical bills, even after insurance. Just hit a little close to home.
Maybe they should develop some sort of criteria where they divert more resources to those who have made good, healthy choices, but then i'm starting to sound like a Nazi
