This article has an interesting perspective on Crossfit: https://www.outsideonline.com/fitness...ness-Plan.html
The basic argument is that Crossfit is great for making you good at Crossfit. But the workouts seem to have little impact on making you a better athlete or cyclist or runner...
Also, there seems to be growing evidence of the dangers of and injuries cause by Crossfit.

that's really no different than many studies on weight lifting in general

I'm thinking of doing the unthinkable and going with clinchers and latex tubes for cyclocross when the course conditions are really wrong for tubular Grifos. Obviously (or maybe it's not so obvious) you can get away with only one tire on the road when you really can't in CX, but the point stands that the hit you take on versatility and ease of use are still pretty substantial. Having done a season on cyclocross tubulars, I think it's worth it there. On the road, I haven't hit the cross-over point where I'm convinced they're worth the hassle for the typical hobbyist racer (if you're someone who wins or podiums a lot and swear by tubulars, I'm not talking about you).
On the road, clinchers with latex tubes in some cases have lower CRR than tubies.
In CX the low pressure/no pinch flat advantage of tubulars makes even sub-optimally conditions-matched tubulars better than perfectly matched clinchers in every case I've seen here in CO. Note: I run PDX tubies which are sort of an all-around CX tire.

I'm pretty sure that being good at crossfit is in fact being a better athlete. They have competitive crossfit and all.

You should probably take up masters swimming. Better target-rich environment for you. My 12-year-old is getting out of his year-round program, and I stopped just short of telling him that he's going to be kicking himself for leaving that crowd in a couple years...
My wife and I were just laughing this morning about getting old. My creepy-age barrier is 29 years old now! (half your age plus seven, round up). We've had this constant stream of after school and summer nannies from this same sorority at the University of Texas (new one every semester). Nothing like a bottomless pit of 18-year-olds to help you realize how old you're getting. Everyone else in my life is aging, but not these nannies.

I'm 34 now, and the whole 18-22 crowd are like newborns.

I know a couple guys into CF. One of them I used to ride with and due to a divorce and Mr. Mom duties he has a lot less time to ride on the weekends. He does CF as a way to keep fit. He's put on muscle, for sure. One thing he told me, "I'm sore _all the time_." To me, this is like going out and riding 30 second intervals every day. You'll make some big gains quickly, but you'll also plateau early and probably end up hurting yourself.
I've though about doing CF. I've got 2 gyms within a mile of my house. I honestly can't justify the money and don't think it would really do for me what I want. I can do my strength work in my back yard and it costs me nothing (once I've bought my equipment). Maybe I don't get the same quality of programming as I would there, but I'm not sure they really spend that much time coming up with quality programming. It seems like it's more just 'smoking' you every time you walk in the door. Honestly, how much capacity can you build if you're doing 90 minutes of work a week? I'm sure it's better than couch surfing, but I think 1 or 2 hard workouts a week with a lot of lesser work in between is a much better plan.
Lately, I've been working the kettlebells as much as I've been riding (maybe 5 hours of each per week). I'm actually trying to build a little muscle, which means weight. I've gotten a tick bigger without hurting body composition (in fact, I might be a bit leaner). I'm seeing good strength gains. The bike is not really suffering. When I ride, I'm better recovered and seem to have better snap to my legs. I feel better in the wind on the flats, but I've probably slowed a bit on long or steep hills. I guess that's part of the compromise.

Yeah, I don't mean to say it will make you a better cyclist. But to say crossfit isn't "athletic" is kind of not seeing the forest through the trees.

There's some weird fitness thing going on at the intersection of adventure type races (spartan challenge, etc) and exercise that's sure to pass as more folks get hurt and die. I have a bunch of facebook friends/relatives who are into these things and none of it seems particularly smart or sustainable.

But then you get to feel extreme and post about it on facebook while telling all of your friends how cool you are.
Kind of goes along with the first rule of crossfit: always talk about crossfit.

Spartan Race - safe, fun and the most painful thing I've ever done. Well... safe for someone in shape for it. Problem is it attracts a bunch of runners that think climbing a rope or scaling a wall is hard.

If safety is what we're after, I can't exactly recommend bike racing.

I've never heard that borderline creepy age thing, neither has half of our board of directors!
