Tuesday Night Worlds.
That sounds miserable. Good luck with the venture. Just remember if it does succeed you may not have time to race, post, or train. Its good to at least try and go it on your own at least once, even if you fail you can at least die knowing you took a few swings instead of the just accepting the lot of being a white or blue collar servant.
Sounds like you have a better family than many of us, I never trusted mine (outside of the wife).
So as idyllic as my work life should be, in actuality I have to deal with some fairly healthy doses of the same crap most folks do. I have to speak to a facilitator later today to prep for a week long meeting that takes place mid april. The gist of the meeting is that one the guiding teacher of our foundation has some serious passive-aggressive issues, a major inability to stay on point long for projects to come to completion, along with some power dynamic control issues. He empowered several committees to run things ( a board of directors and a teacher's council) and then went out and started another organization so he can effectively do whatever he wants when he doesn't like decisions that are made. One of my teaching colleagues retired and named internally the issues with him that led her to this decision. So it's off to Chapel Hill I go to sit in talky meetings that will likely effect no change whatsoever. I'm hoping my wife and I are able to get our gluten free flour mix company off the ground enough that it could replace this. Having made money and not so much money in life, making money was better in many ways. Having been my own boss, and working with others, being the boss was better. I've found it best to rely on family and close friends in life.

I ran my family textile company, that I built with my dad, for many many years…until the US gave away manufacturing. I closed it in 2003. I was just talking to a buddy of mine yesterday and it occurred to me if that had survived as it was for another decade I'd be able to punch out and live large. So it goes.

Bored...so I figured I'd share some pictures from our Spring Break trip. We had an awesome time and lucked into a great place to stay. Will probably go back. Note...no pictures of wife as she doesn't like being photographed and shared...
View from our deck
Destin Harbor at night
My "little" girl (now close to 6' tall)
Being goofy - Dad's getting a little "fat"
V-22 Osprey cruising the beach
Interesting pier ruins I found in "restricted" area on Okaloosa Island.

For real. I have no illusions of my role here. Well-paid warm body 90% of the time. I try not to take too many days off, lest they realize how little work I actually have most of the time.
Still the best among my peers at what I do, though.
Some days I wonder what it would be like if my job were my passion, but it's not, so I'll ride my bike a lot and enjoy the life I lucked into!

welp...some sort of animal has gotten into our dryer vent. I am guessing a squirrel as the vent is pretty high up, a good 30ft. I won't know the details until i get home. Wife has locked the laundry room and put towels under door. Wonder if I can just bring my dog in and let it loose

We had a squirrel drop down our chimney into the (cold) wood stove last fall. I locked the cats away, opened every door and window, put packing blankets up to try to guide its path towards the open windows, waited until everyone was asleep so the kids wouldn't get in the way, and opened the stove.
The squirrel dashed past all the open windows, down the hall and up the stairs, leaving a trail of soot. The only door open up there was my office so it went in there and started doing laps, knocking over lamps, computers, total mayhem.
I got a cookie tray (standard bat-in-the-house removal tool, btw) and shut myself into the office with it, opened the door to the deck, and tried to deflect the thing out the door. It jumped onto my head and then straight up into the air. While it was coming down, I bunted it out the door at last.
Nobody in the house woke up.

I asked because I noticed Battenkill pre-reg was down 20% from last year (2300 vs 2900). Probably multiple factors, including a price increase in that case.
There may be declining participation in general, but I think weather has to be a huge factor. I think 2012 was the no-winter year you are thinking of, I remember 80F days in March. Everybody wanted to be out on their bikes that spring, and only crazy people want to be out on their bikes this spring.

pre-reg opened back in november, no? people could not have known how the winter would play out at that point. if one waited until march to register, last year or in years prior they would have been shut out (most fields).
i feel like when battenkill lost (or abandoned) the UCI element of the race, the race lost much of its mystique -- at least speaking for riders i know who are not local to it.
i decided not to attend battenkill for a few reasons. i realize that i'm the exception (flying in), but the idea that they could postpone it a month just doesn't make sense for one who must book plane tickets.
i pre-reg only as far in advance as required. no doubt it helps the promoter, but i figure they set their early discounts and late penalties in a way that makes sense. i find that for most events (other than the rare few that sell out months in advance), the $10 penalty for late registration is worth it. there are many events out here in the spring where weather is really iffy. few promoters offer any refunds, so those who pre-register take on much of that risk.

My family had squirrels in the attic one time when I was growing up. My dad read on the internet that moth balls apparently will drive the squirrels away. So instead of doing the intelligent thing and putting a couple moth balls in a container up there, we decided to play a game. Which was moth ball baseball. Basically one of us would pitch the moth ball, and the other would try and hit it with the baseball bat. Well we littered the whole attic with destroyed moth balls. Good news is the squirrels were never to be seen again. Bad news is, we almost had to vacate the house the smell was so overwhelming once we came back downstairs. It took us about 2 years to get rid of all the tiny pieces of moth balls in the attic insulation and eventually the smell went away. LOL.
