Everytime I bring my bike in to work I get crap. Especially on race days where my boss understands that I may not show up the next day. Sheesh the crap I get in this sport and the crap I get for being useful at my job.

It's a thankless sport. That said, I regularly have directors and VPs in my office with one or two race bikes against the wall and nobody says a word (other than curiosity or results updates). Expectations have been set and maintained. Might be helpful to be in Austin too.

I want to find a new job, close to an university so that I can hopefully pick up a part time lab position, and gain exposure for the next application season. I should do that now... The news is out, these guys know I want to leave for school, but I won't be going this year. This sucks.

My bike is against the wall in my office. Anytime I get sass I ask if they really want me taking one of their parking spots. (parking on campus is a *****)

I should ride to work. No shower though. It's a "net downhill" ride, but I bet I would still be a bit sweaty after 20 miles.

Listen up, if you're clean, eat well, sweat regularly, use deodorant/antiperspirant, and use a washcloth to wipe down your neck/armpits/uh legpits-area, you won't stink from riding a bike.

this is a perception issue rather than an actual issue.

Yeah, when I was w/out shower facilities, I got a small desk fan. Get back from ride and answer emails in my kit with the fan on me until I'm cool and dry. Head to the bathroom with baby wipes and clean up a bit. Clothes went to a clothesline under my desk with the fan blowing (I still do this). No stink anywhere -- office mate approved.

I do my hard afternoon rides and just do a quick wipedown. I've never had a complaint. Typically hang my clothes out behind the building to dry in the breeze.

Only mention I've ever had was some day I forgot to move the sweaty clothes outside and the heater in the restroom was stuck on so it was like 100f in there. That was gross, and I apologized. Smelled like a hockey-gear bag.

I've seen the photos of you hanging around with monkeys. You might be the guy who smells bad and doesn't know it.

Her name is Coco, and if you're implying she smells, you're WRONG! Don't talk about my costa-rican princess like that!

Also, my boss would tell me. I know this, and I've specifically asked her to do so!

I'm going to try commuting out next week, we'll see how it goes.

I don't have a shower but to the rail stop its a 6 mile descent with maybe a mile of light pedaling.

I'm looking into buying a cross bike, part for commuting, part for racing, and part for the epic fire roads in the mountains. Since I'll be commuting into a bad part of town, I did not want to get something too expensive, but I don't want to get a total beater either. Ideally 500-800, however I've been scouring craigslist and the going price seems to be 1000-1500 for a used bike with 105 components; for that price I can get a new bike.

I put mine together from the frame up just like my race bike. You have an old set of wheels? Bars? Anything else?
