Day 2 of being off the bike. Good timing with my training because it has been cold rain all day.

2 hours of "as many repeats as possible" on a ~400 foot hill averaging around 9%. Quite unpleasant.

1.5 hours. 1' all out to set PR (554 watts) followed by 5 minutes of lungs in pain trying to recover, and then 3x5' with the first one all out to set another PR (352 watts).

Also noticed I weighed 160ish yesterday. Hope it sticks. I've been 165 ± 2 lbs for years.

Recovery again for the next 2 days.

My coach apparently likes me to hurt on New Year, and for the past two years, i've been doing one of over-under workouts from hell. Had a lot of trouble with these last year, but nailed the first one i did this year, which bodes well given that i haven't started my "base" yet

Rest week (base 3 week 4). Went out for a 20' test, came back with a 5' PR instead. (5.15 w/kg)

I'll take it!

Need to work on that longer-term pacing/testing though, I really suck at it.

Mt. Wilson climbest. I'm pretty damn happy with my performance, I felt somewhat wrecked after yesterdays vo2 intervals so I was just hoping to hang on today. I didn't finish with the climbing God's but I hang on pretty damn good and was in the 2nd group. Right at the last point before the summit both my legs cramped BAD. I had to get out of the saddle and stand for about 20 mins around 200W, felt good again once I got to the summit. I only had one banana up to that point and was already 2,000 kj deep. I drank plenty of water...I attribute it to lack of food!

The descent was gnarly but fun.

Awesome way to kick off the new year and ride with my buddies.

2 hours on rollers today, then skied around with the gf for a while. She has skis but hasn't used them for a while, but she was going pretty well after she got the hang of it. Could be a nice way to do some of base with less loneliness and time away from the so.

2 rides for me today: one set of 2x20's and a very mellow ride with my wife. Both were about an hour each but one had a TSS of 9.5.

2 hours on the big team hangover ride, then came home, loaded up the mountain bikes and took my two boys on their first MTB ride. My daughter didn't want to go b/c of sore hands from rock climbing -- and the boys were feeling that on the ride too. The cool thing we discovered over this break: the kids love rock climbing and mountain biking. I'm totally building a wall in the back yard.

So cool! One of my kids is a strong Mtn biker. His high school had a team for the first time this past season, but he chose to play football instead. A couple of his friends raced mtb and we went out to watch...first year of racing here in AZ and there was a huge turn out..even a couple colleges from CO were here offering up scholarships, training camps etc. I was really hoping my kiddo would want to get involved but he also loves football (at 14yo 5'10 and 130 lbs...HS will be his only time to play!).
I love to see kids get interested in active stuff, esp stuff they can do their whole life!

I don't want to look at my bike today!
I did my longest ride ever yesterday (after having just done my longest ride ever last week too!).
156 miles from Chandler to Oracle AZ and back. Friend's birthday ride: 6 of us set off in the freezing cold...3 flats in the first 15 miles...then it warmed up and we had a nice ride out towards Tucson....lunch at a little Mexican place near the Catalina Mtns...then the ride home. I got a flat about 10 miles from the finish. Total was 156 miles at just over 20mph. Fun day on the bike!

His approach is to go out like a bullet until he blows up. In the past, that's come pretty quickly, but it seems a good winter of riding and a lot of time on the mountain bike has paid off pretty big. He'll be a great rider in the future if he sticks with it.

3hrs of z2 motoring this morning. Hit a couple of the climbs at low/mid z4 but otherwise kept it pretty steady.

Got on the trainer, first time pedaling since I crashed November 3rd, so really easing back into it. 45 minutes at recovery effort. The hardest part was keeping my heart rate below endurance pace, even at a very easy workload. I guess high rest + low fitness = high heart rate.

I am kind of on hiatus currently. Re-prioritized some things and taking some time riding easy or off the bike. Been into the sport a bit too seriously and basically had cut everything else in life out. So just trying to find a better balance. And no longer suffering in rain or cold for the sake of training, I'll let you guys enjoy that.

It's a common pattern (much like bodybuilding) where it becomes all encompassing for many and then you see other parts of your life pass you by (and you aren't married or have any kids).

Good for you though

Successfully completed the 20' test today! Another PR in the books, 307w for 20', or 4.37 w/kg.

Previously my best 20 mins (since 2009) was 285w, so I'm pretty happy with it.

But there's more room for improvement!

The hill I used (Page Mill) has a few flat/downhill parts that are annoying.. makes it harder to keep the power up. Should probably use OLH for this but it's a bit further out for me.
