Getting pretty sick of my IT Band. Trying to gradually increase back, but haven't been able to get past an hour of endurance pace. Doesn't really bother me riding but it is so achy at home at times. Stupid. Hate this injury.

Made an assault to Onyx Summit (elev 8443). From my house it doesn't look that bad with 40 miles away and 7500 elevation gain (okay that does sound bad). Going up I met a 55 year old dude climbs it at least once a week starting from Big Bear descent, and climbs up; 100 miles and probably 15k of climbing. Yeah, he dropped me about halfway up.

After hitting 7k feet, I turned around. My legs felt good but I didn't want to ruin the month because of one ride. I had no idea how close I was to the summit, but it looks like I turned with about 5 miles to go.

@furiousferret thanks it feels good to be back!

Also feels like I'm made of glass, in a way I'm glad I'm not racing yet because mentally I'm definitely not ready for it. By the time January rolls around I'll be more than ready though!!

How much, if any, anxiety did you have when you first started rolling again? My return is a way off but I anticipate I'll be nervous at first when I do ride.

I rode 10 days after surgery both times and was OK on my own, but nervous around other riders for a few weeks. It's like when you first start, except the improvement (returning to old levels of comfort) comes back quickly. n=2.

obv every situation will be different. my take is the more time off, the bigger the mental block that can build up.

with my injuries this season, i pushed pretty hard to get back on the bike -- and to race -- ASAP partly for fitness but also for the psychological aspect.

clavicle plated & racing ~4 weeks later. (a bit tentative, of course)
broken femur & it took ~10 weeks to get back to "real racing" (other than some local stuff).

i was scared to jump back in after the clavicle thing but i got back so fast that i didn't have too much time to dwell on the bad stuff. the mental block that built up after the femur was WAY bigger. i think that every extra day/week that passed gave me more time to build up the fear of crashing.

all works out OK in the end, but i think longer breaks can equate to a bit of a tougher road back.

I had quite a bit of IT band issues at first but I think the foam roller/time off the bike helped to some degree. Once in awhile it sneaks up on me but it has cooperated lately. Tried to foam the crap out of it?

What happened with you? truck hit you? wut??

Today was the first ride I was able to do where I could go hard and was mostly limited by my fitness than my leg sucking. I put down some serious PR's since the injury(270W @ 13 mins). Leg feels better and doesnt get super sore/achy/hurt.

All this gym work is paying off, going to stick with it!

Yes. Truck. 13 cracked vertebrae, 3 broked ribs, broken left collar bone, both lungs deflated, bleeding and bruised brain, internal bleeding amounting to nearly half my blood. I was on ventilator for a week and sedated in icu for like 10 days. I don't remember anything until two weeks after the crash, including the morning of, even prior to the crash.

mostly irritated because I have a back brace I can't take off and a neck brace too, so that's all annoying. The rib pain is more or less gone and I can sneeze now without pain. It's been 6 weeks and I have 6 more with the brace then I can hopefully resume activity. I don't want to hijack this thread and make it a about me.

All in all I honestly feel less bad than I expected. The doctors told my family I may or may not make it. It's amazing after hearing you almost died to be walking around and thinking normally.

a buddy of mine spent 100 days in a back brace. he spent a ton of time on the stair master. the day he got his brace off he rode 5 w/kg for a 20' test (which was really good for him)....literally after not riding the bike for that time. he was riding as good as ever.

bottom line is that amazing things are possible. sounds like you had a rougher go than anyone deserves...but don't count anything out.

not too bad, mostly just worried about cars not people since I'm only riding solo or with one other person while i build fitness back up.

@ovoleg my crash wasn't too bad, all things considered.

I got taken out in a race 4th, broken collarbone and 5 ribs.. all healed up now and working on range of motion and fitness now. glad to hear you're doing well on the bike now!

Foam rolling seems to make it worse. I've been going to PT three times a week and they dry needle, massage, and then do exercises on glute hips. I took 2 weeks completely off the bike, and have been trying to ease back in. It has improved some, but it's still like no where near acceptable.

Hip exercises are what did it for me. Massage only treats the inflammation and soreness, not the muscle imbalance.

Especially if it underwater basket weaving. A very difficult sport and yet courses on it have the highest average grade on campus.

It must be that it has great teachers. ;^)

Injuries are a SOB. It's hard enough training when everything is firing, then you gotta deal with this BS
So you're back to riding now Creatre? Glad you didn't sell all your stuff! The new bike is def sexy.

Damn everyone is hurt! Get better all!

Over here I just did my first 1+hr ride since my injury and I feel fine. I am going to continue with this infintesmal increase in riding until October, which is my personal goal for the start of base training.

*Fingers crossed*

1 hour of high-ish cadence; I figure if I can't lay down big power, might as well work on the spin.

Makes for about 8 for the week, a decent start to the long road back to fitness!
