Rain is on the menu for tomorrow here. A crapton of it, and 30-40 mph winds with gusts up to 74 mph. I guess riding is out haha.

Which makes me think... I need to find a testing protocol that works for me. On Monday I bailed 15min into a 20' test (my second ever test) due to poor pacing and a bad attitude. I chose a value for my FTP using that test as a reference and my intuition, clearly not a rigorous method by any means.

I think I'm going to look into the 8' testing protocol, mainly out of curiosity. I know about the @waterrockets 3min all-out AC burner FTP test; no way in hell I'm doing that.

Part of the thing about an FTP test is it's also teaching you how to pace yourself at max effort level, which IMO, is invaluable for a race situation. Yeah you're likely never going to be pegged exactly at 105% of your FTP for 20 minutes, but knowing how to pace yourself in a situation like that is the difference between burning matches while at the limit and conserving just enough energy to not get popped.

Yeah, this is often the case for me too.

Right, it may be a good idea to continue executing the 20' test as a mental exercise. I realize too that the more I ride/train with a PM, the better I will become at pacing.

20 mins of stepping up on my plyo box, some weighted some not.

Then 30 mins running, in the rain.

I draw the line at running in place though!!! I mean I have standards.

how's the riding (safety-wise) around there?

had to do some work years ago in that area. i wasn't a road-rider at the time, but i used to drive up to skyline to ride my MTB. in thinking back on it, the roads seem perfect...but my memory of the drivers was pretty crazy. i never loved the times i had to ride my MTB up on skyline.

my nerves are probably more hardened from road miles than they were back then, though.

Planned to do some 5 minute intervals but ended up trading pulls with some guy who eventually blew up. Legs were solid so then just hit the 40 mile route as hard as I could to beat the darkness. Finished a few minutes under 2 hours, now to prep for the rain.

Work: 1499 kJ
Intensity: 85%
Training load: 142

I was pretty down on myself the last week or two since it seemed like I was regressing. Today changed that. I didn't set any major marks (the road had too much debris and had too many turns) but had a solid effort.

It's going to be dumping buckets here Saturday so I'm doing my efforts now. Still can't break 1,000w but getting much closer, 953 after climbing all the 10%+ stuff.

Tomorrow will be easy spin.

Yeah peak. Lost a lot of strength in that 4 months off the bike, plus at 135lb I'm not a guy who will ever dump crazy watts.

It's fine, but it's the only place I've ever ridden, except for commuting in Tempe. It feels unsafe riding up at night, but probably isn't. I have bright lights and there aren't many cars up there at night.

Rode 8 days in a row due to missed rides last week (rain.) Most of it was in the dark. 265 miles and close to 9k Kj's. Looking forward to a rest day tomorrow.

Yeah, I did a test almost six years back now where I managed a 5 sec average of 897. Plug in my weight at the time (123) and it was actually surprisingly far up the e-wang chart. Not outstanding, but solid. A peak 5' between 900 and 1,000 is pretty good at 135 lbs. Yeah, in a flat or downhill drag race you might have a problem, but on the right terrain and/or with smart riding, you're not exactly bringing a knife to a *** fight.

2x20' on the spin bike in the gym. Sweaty mess. They keep the place too damn warm for anyone actually doing any work and the fans are totally ineffective.

well, yeah, but tell someone who is used to a 5 second peak of 1100-1300 and, well.... I'm just getting pissed I cant yet do what I used to do. Don't tell me not to be pissed though, because that's what's motivating me to get my fitness back.
