That's SOP. The permit process is rigorous and time consuming. It uses the same USAC officials that are currently knee deep in cross.

One venue scratched. Working on two (well not me, other people are doing the work).

Some unexpected distractions as well. One confirmed charity ride, another requested one, plus a request to do a circuit race (?!).

At least one more possible venue for a crit, have to look into it (this would be my thing, not someone else's).

In the NY association some folks started discussing the whole "USAC or not to USAC". However the principals took it offline as it was a USAC forum of sorts.

Quick question for you - for a circuit race (2.3 - 3.3 miles long) would I need lead/follow vehicles? Yellow line, public/local roads (no state/numbered stuff). it would seem to make sense, esp with the yellow line rule in effect, and with such a long loop I'd think you'd want a lead vehicle.

It might be a Diane question but it's cross season and I don't want to bother her.

The Norwell Circuit Race (ironically didn't run last year due to lack of pre-reg) is a 3mile circuit with 99% of the route having the full width of the road. That still has a lead car and a second car behind the main field, both with USAC officials.

Thanks. That's what I figured, and it would make sense. Trying to balance someone's request for a 2.3-3.3 mile circuit race versus a 0.7 mile course crit that I sort of "drew" using an intersection of the circuit plus a local school, which would be the base for the circuit races.

I believe that this falls under guidelines not hard and fast rules. If it was a UCI race, definitely. It's up to the permitting official. Ask Diane.

Thanks, I will. Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable with a field of racers flying around a course with no lead vehicle, and I'd want some kind of a follow vehicle.

The promoter has stated that it will be a USAC race, and it says so on the bikereg page. He is known for being capricious but I would be very surprised if he backed away from that. A couple of years ago he had an online survey asking how important the sanction was to racers, and a significant majority said it was important.

If you came out, what field would you do?

i don't have the times in front of me, but i think it might be possible to race twice. could i do something like cat 2 saturday and 40+ sunday, or 35+ then 40?

OTOH, once might be more than enough.

what would you race?

The only races Sunday are the P/1 and the odd-numbered masters fields. So assuming you will be between 40 and 44, you could do cat 2 or 40+ on Saturday and then 35+ on Sunday. All of those fields will be very tough. 35+ may be small and a little weird because that's a very unusual field type for the northeast.

I'm registered for the 45+ on Sunday, but I will probably be there Saturday as well because a lot of friends are racing, plus it will be a coworker's first road race.

Well he does have two crits under his belt -- Rockleigh and Harlem, where he crashed. I shouted at him to move up on the next-to-last lap, then he never came by again, quite the sinking feeling as the friend and bike race enabler.

It's not easy for a NYC cyclist to test the racing waters.

What races are folks looking at for spring 2015? There's not a lot on the bikereg calendar yet.

New Britain 3/29, 4/12 (not on the calendar but CDR says it's happening)
Battenkill 4/18-19
Quabbin 4/25
some Dieter spring Catskill race 5/2
CCNS Kermis 5/15 -- happy this is earlier this year!

None of the spring series, and not a single crit, are on the calendar yet afaict. If they stick to their usual schedule, Brinkerhoff (Johnny Cake) will be 3/28, 4/4, 4/11.

Are there any spring races that know their dates yet, but aren't on the calendar? Anything at all before 3/28?

Plainville should start the second week of March. TBD. The NEBRA calendar doesn't usually come together until after the winter meetings, and it does not include NY.

If if you come out for Quabbin give me a heads up if you'd like to get together afterwards. I live 2 miles from the start.

Just realize that Quabbin is a pirate race so no USAC points or finishes for Cat5.

Looks like a new stage race has been added for the 2015 season. The Nittany Stage Race held in state college, pa. 2 days, 3 races. TT through downtown, crit downtown and road race with 1900+ ft of climbing per lap. I haven't seen the course maps yet, but looks like it could make for a good race

I'll probably come down for a week or two of Branch Brook. Not much else going on in March it seems like.

world of pain. first year i was sick; got dropped by the lead group, chased back, only got dropped again (pretty obvious that would happen). got 8th. second year i was coming back from injury; 4th after 1 lap and legs just blew up on the second lap before the climbing started. Got 12th or 13th...

now i'm inspired to trim down to 67kg...

Is there any way to go back and look at last years bikereg calendar? Trying to get an idea of when races typically fall.
