Wheel speed and fan speed are not related (unless they have some super fancy hookup).

Without knowing the speed our guessing is more useful - other than just trusting them saying the Venge is faster than round tubes.

The difference is huge on decent. I have video of my kid (early 15) chasing his coach. Coach on a Venge, kid on a TT bike. At that time they were roughly the same speed on the flats and 40lbs different weight. My kid descended 37+, coach was 34ish. Time difference was 3:15 in 25 min and much due to the climb too and the heavier rider, but as that course is ridden some 30X a year, its pretty clear to us the TT bike (mostly wheels) is much faster.

Arenberg 23 doesn't exist.

I gotta get some new tubs to be ready for when mine wear out. Stupid question, but I don't have excess tub wheels sitting around to stretch the tires. No reason I can't stretch them on clincher rims, right?

I think I tried that once and it didn't stretch as much. I can't remember though. Channel for the clincher is a bit deep. I'll toss some extra rims in the trailer, you should grab them whenever.

I'll be down at my dad's after April 12th also, like the 18th range, so I can bring rim/s with me then as well.

That would be awesome of you. I'm looking to do Aetna on the 12th, so that would work.

I just put two wheels in my pile of stuff to put in the trailer/Expedition. They both happen to be track wheels, junky rear, light and too flexible front (formerly my super ultra lightweight front wheel). They'll stretch a tire fine, not much else.

Awesome.

I have a pair of Flo wheels I rather like; theyre wider profile (25.5mm) and with 23mm tires they end up roughly like 25mm tires.

I want to try to emulate the feel with my 46mm PowerTap Carbon clinchers - which have a 20.8mm outer profile. Currently have 23mm tires; will 25mm tires feel like junk on there? Probably a dumb question, but havent dabbled with anything other than 23mm tires before. (Tire/wheel compatibility charts say its fine; but will it feel fine?)

nothing ruins a good workout like a noisy bottom bracket.

They explain their method here:

In my experience, the kind of tire will play into this more than the width. I run 25's of narrow clinchers for training and don't notice any ill effects. I also will run a 23/25 mis-matched set and can't really tell a difference between the two with the same tire model just different widths.

It's not as effective but it works. Keep an eye out for guys selling used aluminum rims.

You can run wider tires on narrow rims. I used to run 1.9-2.35" mountain bike tires on 17/20mm rims (inner/outer widths), typically at 18-25 psi, mtb races, no problems.

The tire will fold over at lower speeds at lower pressures, although I have no idea what the numbers would be for your set up. You lose some of that cushion advantage you get with the wider rim. Still, though, the 25mm tire is still wider than the 23mm, should be softer.

If I was to get another Quarq do you think I would be better off getting an Elsa RS or a regular 110 BCD unit? Currently rocking Di2 on the new bike.

easy - RS, rock some Ultegra chainrings - call it a day.

abhirama 04-02-15 08:52 PM

I also read that Quarq slashed their prices by $200 after Pioneer did theirs. It might be a good idea to wait a bit for it to kick in.

Edit: looks like the prices have already kicked in.

Yeah, that is what catalyzed this whole idea for me. I currently have a 130 BCD Red Quarq but my recent use of a few 52/36 cranksets and my affinity for stage races (Along with the memory of Devil's kitchen at Catskills) makes me feel like I may be better off just switching to 110 bcd.

The RS provides the advantage of being able to use 53/39 or 52/36 (Or even a 34 if I so desire) but at the disadvantage of the rings being some serious cash and the fact that the RS weighs a bit more than a regular 110 BCD unit, not to mention the rings weigh a bit more than regular flat rings. Honestly though I don't know how much I really care about ~100 grams.

Why not try the new Pioneer PM? It seems like a better system than Quarq. (I'm one of the people who went through three Quarqs over 18 months before switching to SRM.)

I had that same problem. Replaced the BB, but it turned out the problem was the rear hub. D'oh.

I have had the opposite experience, One quarq, two years, zero problems. I even called them like 20 times because I was super sure I was going to have an issue with mine (Offset was outside of normal range) they were easy to talk to, kind and my unit didn't actually have a problem.

furiousferret 04-03-15 02:47 PM

Been eyeing the Pioneers ever since they came out. The Vectors are serviceable, so there isn't a rush.

mike868y 04-03-15 07:11 PM

all bb30 cranks are cross compatible, right?

on that note..anyone have a bb30 170mm compact crank they're looking to get rid of?

shovelhd 04-03-15 07:41 PM

What do you mean by cross compatible? They can all work with a BB30 BB, yes.

wens 04-03-15 07:45 PM

Yes to compatability. You may need spacers or shims or such though.
