True. We were never all-in, but have been making regular 401k contributions over the years, and re-mortgaging for lower rates. Have a decent "nest-egg" saved (could be better of course). After my wife's job end in a month, we may have to withdraw some from the 401k early to pay things off, and take a tax penalty. But at least the money is there in the first place.

You were a a bazillion time right about di2. Now my problem is deciding whether to never ride my mechanical bikes (might as well sell at that point), upgrade their shifting, or sell them and buy electronic equipped bikes. I'm not going back.

My rain bike, the only other bike I own, has 5700. It's fine. I see no need to change it as I don't race it.

Given that I don't have a cell phone at all (except the pay as you go flip phone we leave in the car for emergencies), that would not include me. On the other hands, my students laugh/gasp in disbelief when I tell them that at the beginning of every semester as a reason that I cannot answer e-mails in the middle of the night before a test/assignment is due (and generally only answer e-mails 8-5 Mon-Fri). Some of them tell me they can't afford to pay for the gas to come to more than every other class (and can't afford the book - even when I tell them the last edition is good enough and can be had on eBay for $5-10), but they all have smartphones with data plans that run $100+ a month.

It's not about need. Not remotely.
I'm in too deep with this setup already. No way I could stomach going further.

Today a new guy came along on the club ride. He was pretty young and looked fit, but he bounced while he pedaled and kept passing me and some of the other back-markers. Late in the ride there is a 3 mile climb and he vanished off the back.
We waited at the top for some time, then gave up and went home. I wonder if we'll see him again.

dang. my warm up rollers broke. One of the rollers separated. After 24 years I guess they don't owe me anything. If anyone knows of cheap folding rollers or a cheap but high end trainer let me know? This is strictly for race warm ups and occasional use while traveling.

I'm going to be in the market for cheap folding rollers soon too. Metal drums, going to be used for track warm ups.

Minoura. Solid quality. Probably the best $250 (rollers and resistance unit) i've ever spent on cycling

i use performance rollers that cost like $100 and are fine. i had a pair of minoura rollers and the plastic end caps came loose from the metal drums. not sure if all minouras are the same, but the pair i bought didn't last long (2-3 seasons)
