Ugh. A Junior racer hit the deck tonight, I think he'll be okay, but as a precaution the officials/promoters called for an ambulance (some facial cut/s, didn't move after the crash, complaining of pain at hip, knee, face). They got an ambulance, a 500 gal pumper aka fire truck, two state troopers in their two cars.

The Junior hit my wheel when I moved a bit to avoid a guy moving a bit in front of me. Initially I thought the in front moved a lot, he didn't, it was just a foot or so (according to the video, aka The Truth). I also moved over a similar amount, braked as well. The Junior touched my wheel immediately, the guy behind him (long time friendly rival, like 25 years or so, he and his wife was one of the first non-super close people to learn that the Missus was pregnant), went head over tea kettle. It was a point in the course where a full on headwind hit us and everyone fanned out and slowed.

I think we did 4 or 5 laps before the crash. The local pro super star was handicapped half a lap. He'd bridged to us before the crash happened.

We headed home for various reasons but I felt okay for those few laps I did. I feel better that there was nothing on the video that showed a glaring mistake or poor riding. Shared some stuff with the official for the record.

Now I want to watch it again.

The battle took place near where we lived in Holland. The the movie came out and I thought it was totally epic because I could relate to so many things in the movie. I had a gazillion WW2 plastic models, the local zoo had a Sherman tank in the playground, there were abandoned bunkers in the woods, etc etc. Later I realized that the movie was epic for other reasons, like the cast, budget, etc.

Eh, as a big movie buff, I'd say it's decent and watchable, but not great. Some of the vignettes are great, especially the ones with Anthony Hopkins and Sean Connery, but it suffers from the 70s blockbuster movie failing of too many stars (aka Towering Inferno Syndrome), and all of the American actors are just plain miscast. Gene Hackman is wasted (not easy to do!) and Robert Redford looks like he belongs in a different movie entirely.

I didn't know.

I fell once while I was at school. I got an EMT truck, 2 ambulances, 500 gal pumper, 2 state troopers, 5 or 6 volunteer cars (with the flashing light on the dash). Granted, I fell pretty spectacularly but I was 100% okay except for some minor road rash. Tonight's crash reminded me of this.

Hopefully the Junior is okay. He's still at the hospital, has a couple teammates for support (and his dad - his dad got in the ambulance with him).

Oh man, you're killing me (as Junior would say). At least they used the daughter of the actual woman to play the woman who ran the hotel or whatever that house was where the Germans stayed.

Pretty sure (in ct at least) they have to send a fire truck with an ambulance. Seems like a dumb rule to me.

Hope the junior is alright. Cdr, is it just me, or is junior participation (and team support) was up this year?

Sorry for the derail, but I just read Ebert's 1977 review of the movie out of curiosity.

Ryan O'Neal is so bad that (the producer) should have fired him and started over

That fine actor Gene Hackman turns in a performance that looks as if it's trying to hide underneath itself
... and so on. I don't always agree with Ebert (I tend to find him too sentimental), but there are few things as entertaining as a review of a movie that he hated.

Junior races are up. Mainly CCAP, a green/blue team (at Limerock, they got 1-2-3), and believe it or not a Cheshire based triathlon team (Nutmeg something something).

No word on the Junior after some posts from teammates with him at the hospital. I wonder if the parents asked to not FB stuff, his dad went with him.

but that is kinda why i like it....it has that 1970s interpretation of everything - grand and campy. not as good as The Longest Day however which has really really good. both movies are based on books by Cornelieus Ryan and both books are excellent. maybe the best WW2 books ever written. Sorta like Ambrose's Band of Brothers but like decades earlier

The Longest Day was from a totally different era and I agree it's much better. Especially the Germans. It's interesting that the Nazi* officers and soldiers were much more believable in 1962 than in 1977. Also, John Wayne is to The Longest Day what Robert Redford is to A Bridge Too Far, an actor who has wandered into the wrong movie.

@mike868y The Junior is okay, he was held overnight for observation, nothing happened other than some soreness etc.

Sat up in the last lap of the Kermis. The Cannondale team did it text book, drilled it to the hairpin, drilled it out of the hairpin, got 1st and 3rd. They used 2 guys before the hairpin, not sure of after as I couldn't see that far ahead.

Stomach bug of some kind, suffered in a non-FTP way (felt really queasy). Legs never felt stressed and in fact today feels like I rested yesterday, absolutely no tenderness even when I squeeze various muscles in my leg.
@shovelhd was yelling at me at the hairpin, I appreciate it, was balancing the bottle of nitro as it were. Just didn't have it in me on the last lap.

Great to see you yesterday as always, sorry you weren't feeling it. I hope your teammates made a good showing.

I heard somebody say my name out there but I couldn't figure out (a) why there would be a spectator on the ass end of the course (b) who would know me. That explains it!

There was basically no moment in that race when I was able to turn my head to look at anything other than either my stem or whatever was directly in front of me.

Cannondale. Hah. You can blame me for their results. They stopped by between races and asked me about how to take the hairpin. I showed them. Looks like it worked. They should have bought me a beer.

Course has a fast downhill into a sharp s turn followed by a very short steep uphill. Thought I wanted to be first coming through the final turn for momentum into the home stretch. Made the move on the backstretch and came through the uphill in first, but my bike handling failed me as I had to brake coming through the turn. Move totally wasted with that braking and 6th place finish gassed on the straightaway. If I sat in I think I could have finished podium, but I didn't trust the sketch ball who finished 2nd coming through that section as he had been all over the road all race. Oh well. Bigger challenge tomorrow at Fox River Grove.

Southeast Regional Series - Albany Unchained (race #2 in the series). 3/4 Women Crit. 1st place (of 14)!!

Bridged to a solo break on the last lap, three together into turn 3. I went onto the front after turn 3, and had a big gap on the uphill sprint (4-5 bike lengths). SUPER happy with the win. I got asked if I want to cat up after this race

Next is the road race tomorrow.
