I'm not surprised that numbers at Wilmington-Whiteface were small.
The vast majority of "cyclists" you see in that town are tri-nerds. Despite the absolutely amazing terrain, great roads and amount of public land, there were relatively few roadies or MTB guys whenever I was out there.
And, with how far away it is from major population centers, well, it results in poor attendance.

There aren't many people there. It's a destination area. So the tri-nerds are coming there from other places. The hill climb typically draws 300 or so. The leadville qualifier and ironman multitudes. Folks vote with their wallets and this will be the last year of those races, but it's too bad as there's a long history of good road races up there, and I have a vested interest in having a race 5 miles from my house.

The sole purpose of rankings should be measuring the eWang. And maybe cash.
Edit: Not the case.
https://www.usacycling.org/usa-cycling-rankings-faq.htm
A: The new rankings system will allow USA Cycling members to be
more accurately ranked within their given disciplines. USA Cycling will also use
the rankings system to seed call-ups for various national championships,
beginning with the 2012 Cyclo-cross National Championships.

maybe you should move to a ****hole in the middle of nowhere.
actually, you don't need to do that. just change your address on usacycling to somewhere in north dakota. voila, you're a star!

11 of 91 in the state for Cat 3s.
I live in a 1 square mile zip code, give or take. It's where all the riffraff live in our otherwise hooty tooty town. I'm only partially joking.

somehow, I'm ranked in the 71th percentile in tt's in the state. I didn't even do a tt as a cat 3.. oh well, I'm still ranked 1 of 1 in my zip code, so I'm happy

I'm ranked 12 out of 230 in NY. Right behind JJ. He should give me some of his unwanted upgrade points.
Speaking of which, while on the USAC site I noticed that 4 races I've done this year reported smaller field sizes than I thought (like, 44 instead of 52, for example), so I only have 13 upgrade points. That's kind of disappointing, and means I'm unlikely to upgrade this year.

I was, for most of a season, the best cat 3 in the country. King of the middle ground at the shorter distance.

the system is silly.
one of the two 45+ in NJ ranked higher than me is an ex-pro. The other, while an awesome rider, drops out of almost any race he won't place well in. As a result he lacks mid pack, and dfl results. since they usually only put finishers on the results his score is deceptively low. road-results is even more ridiculous.

For the purpose of upgrade points, do starters count or finishers? If it's starters how do people generally take this into account when calculating upgrade points? My local races generally only put finishers, we start with 50+ but end with something in the high 30's typically.
I don't really care though honestly. If you're getting points consistently, you'll keep getting them.

I can't upgrade. It's irrelevant to me. I thought the inquiry was into the ranking system as an indicator of ability.

Huh. One of those two guys I've beaten a couple of times at Augusta (not that that means much). I didn't realize he was that good.

Well, I looked up my ranking - I'm 1 of 4 crit racers in my zip code.
To be honest, I don't think I'd looked at those rankings in years. But, I do remember many years ago bragging to my parents that I was like the 27th ranked Cat 5 in the country. They didn't understand the Category system, and I didn't explain it. But 27th in the country sounded impressive.
In other news, I raced this weekend. It didn't go well. I thought I finished DFL, but the results show otherwise. Third from last - Yay? It was a hard field and a hard course. The hill after turn one just kicked my ass. I've done 60 mile rides with less total climbing than I did in that 45 min. crit. I'm a bit frustrated with my riding/racing right now. My training has been solid, and I've been hitting my numbers, but I'm just not putting things together right. It also could be that I keep choosing to do P/1/2/3 and 35+ events instead of 3/4 races, so I am putting myself against much tougher competition, but who knows.

if one can follow that to its next logical step it would deem irrelevant any number of state championships, and even render irrelevant leaving the house.
