Burlingame Criterium. Scrape city

35+ 3/4 - crash/finshed

w/ @hack. started on front row having some advice on the NorCal thread. A former teammate crashed on U-turn right in front of me on like 3rd lap. i had to come to a stop and got shuffled to the back. spent a lot of time climbing back up. Then I crashed going around the U-turn. I'm not sure what happened. I don't think it was a pedal strike because i dont see any marks on my shoes or pedals. I dont think anyone hit me, so i'm blaming myself. Got sorted, got a free lap reset, then was almost immediately crashed out by a guy that lost his chain and swerved into me. Then there was another crash in the U-turn nearing the end of the race...i just had slow a little there. Then as i was slowing moving up to decided if it was really worth it, there was big crash right after the finish line in the final laps (i'm not sure if this was Hack's crash or not). I avoided all the stuff on the ground and decided to finish a safe distance from the back of the field. So that was fun.

35+123s - pulled/DNF

Fudgy was there. but really i was in my own little pain world at the back with like 10 other guys that had no chance of finishing. After that first race, i could never get that U turn just right and so i was full gas sprinting out of it on every lap. really i was pretty much sprinting out of every little corner. I struggle a little bit in technical courses and its not a big deal in the 3/4s, but in the 35 123s where the current masters national crit champ doesnt win the race, because he lost the current state champ, its a big deal. i got pull after 20 minutes...but i wasnt the first one pulled so thats good.

elbow is a little sore, hip is a little sore. hurts to walk a little, but not pedal. bar tape is a little scuffed. I'm fine. Looking forward to the next crit with 4 corners.

I almost crashed in that section of the course about 5 times last year.

Fun race though, although it sounds like a crash-fest this year!

Elite Crit Nationals - survived, in the sense that I didn't crash... DNF though.

Didn't sprint hard enough when we were lining up (literally), started near the back, never really got a chance to move up. 1k course with lots of turns and a little bump in a turn.. gap-city.

After 18 minutes I just couldn't do it anymore, self-pulled. Damn. Good experience though, will be back next year!

HR was way up, power way down, no bueno. A guy/someone broke their leg I heard, so it coulda been worse..

That'd be the one.

No race results for me, but my son did junior nationals. Lucas had never done a TT until he Saturday. Luckily they let him have a practice run down the ramp. I told him to ride the course to warm up and get a look at it. I thought he'd just do an easy spin, but he got so hyped up by the start ramp and the countdown clock that he rode his practice lap all out. When he got back, he got back in line for another practice on the ramp, then leaned over the fence and threw up his breakfast.

So we went back to the car amd and I let him lie down and had him drink some small sips of water. We had about 45 minutes till his start and I told him that I didn't want him to race unless he felt 100%. It's just a bike race and it wasn't worth getting sick over. After awhile he said he felt up to it and he was ready to go.

So he went. He broke 20 minutes, was briefly in 6th place, and finally ended up 29th out of 34. He was thrilled not to be last. In the car back to Tahoe City, he said "Hey, does this mean I'm the 29th fastest 11 to 12 year old in the country?"

I guess it does.

"Wow! That's awesome!"

Yes. Yes it is.

Sadly, no jerseys.

The 19+ race included at least a few Cat 2 and maybe some Cat 1's, but I'm not sure yet.

Anyway...I also won the Cat 4 race today. Pace was a little slower at 21.2mph avg. We were together for the first half of the first lap, then two rode off the front to a 10sec lead. Four of us started to bridge, only three of us made it (I ended up snapping across the remainder of the gap to let the two know that I was there and had two more right behind me, and that we'd have a good group to work together). We got organized immediately, communicated a lot, and built up the lead to 20, 30, 40seconds. One of our moto support was giving us intervals, which was so useful. We worked equally until 1km left in the first lap (of 28.3km each). I was trying to convince them that we didn't need to be pushing 23+: 22 would be just fine, with our lead >40sec and no one in the chasing group strong enough to bring us back.

Welp, one of the girls from yesterday said, "Yeah, but you can sprint!" So the game was up. I didn't do a single pull after that. So I sat in for the next 29km, we built the lead to 2min. They didn't try all that hard to drop me (and I doubt it would have worked).

Before the final corner I was 4th wheel. Did a small jump to 3rd wheel. After the corner I did that again to be 2nd wheel. A nice long lead out. I was checking my shoulder every 3sec for someone starting their sprint. I waited until 200m and went. I actually got to sit up this time on the line!! But I had a *massive* right calf cramp right at the line.

So...double gold medal weekend ^_^ I also finally get my cat upgrade. Woo!

ETA: Oh. This sprint I hit a 1351w peak. Not bad with a twingy right calf.

Emrick Blvd Crit 234 - 5th/40+

Well my luck finally changed. Course is a out a mile with slight uphill finishing stretch and downhill backside. Winds were about 10-15 with headwind on back downhill stretch and mostly crosswind through the finishing area. This race was active and I contributed to that a lot. Nothing would stick though. Finally last lap with one guy 5-8 seconds off the front solo. We were just coming around the curve into the crosswind about 700-800 meters from the line and guy next to me jumps, I decide to go with him. He hammered the whole way, I had a spot prior to the race picked out to sprint from, but knowing I have a high 30 seconds I should have went earlier. Instead I hesitated waiting for my spot instead of going off instinct and at that moment two guys got the jump on me. I got boxed for a split second then found a hole and manged 5th. Happy with the result and always learning from each race

Raced a couple crits this weekend..

Friday was a flat and fast 4 corner .7 mile crit. I was able to sit in the back of this one..finished 20th out of about 30. As it turns out I was trying to channel my inner cdr-power. 210ap/230np 25.2mph. This is the least amount of power ive put out in a race. It was a good course to be able to not do much work. I had 3 or 4 laps in a row that were 165-175 watts. Looking forward to this one next year. Started the 3/4 but my leg was cramping right before the start and I missed my clip in with the crampy leg. otb in a couple laps and I pulled out, still more racing to do for the weekend so I figured I wouldn't kill myself.

Saturday had a 180 and a short hill. I still don't go up hills very well. Callups by order of registration and I ended up in the 4th row, something like 60 started. Missed my clip in and was towards the back..lasted a couple laps but between the headwind on the long start/finish stretch and the hill I ended up getting dropped and pulled. They placed as they pulled so at least it wasn't a dnp. waki killed the masters race and won by like 5 bike lengths in the sprint. He makes bike racing look easy. (not sure what happened in the p123 for him..im came out of restaurant from eating and he was in a small group otb)

Sunday was a great course. Slight incline to a 180, something like 7 turns total. Call up by registration again and was in the 2nd row. Didn't nail my clip in (but didn't completely screw it up either) but still able to start in a decent position. My cornering and following/staying close to wheels still needs a lot of work (was getting better by the end of the race) and I ended up otb after a couple laps with a small group of 10. They gave us a bell lap when the main field had like 4 to go (we would have been lapped/close to being lapped with probably close to 2 to go) and I didn't bother contesting it since I sat in the back of this group just trying get better at my cornering/wheel following.

Found out after my race on Sunday why I was having trouble clipping in..the tip of my cleat was broken. Going to change that out tonight.

Fun weekend of racing..confidence is getting better slowly..not really sure why it went away but unless I just keep getting out there there is nothing I can do about that..but now its time to take a couple days off. I almost didn't race at all after the club TT with how my leg felt but by Friday it was fine. Time to take a couple days off then start trying to prep for the state TT (read: ride the TT bike a ton) at the end of July.

When I saw your dnf in the results and heard about the race being neutralized I was worried about you...glad you kinda sorta had a good experience!

Volunteer park p12 crit. 4th.

Attacked/followed a bunch but nothing I was in was given much of a leash. I don't think this was because of me, but it seemed like it was the case. A break of 7 or so finally got a steady gap, then somehow crashed on the uphill going into the last corner and that was the end of their escape. Our team was a bit outgunned so surfed wheels into the finish and just didn't have the legs. It was hot, went through 2 bottles in a 70' crit. Damn

Tacoma twilight p12 crit. 5th.

More of the same being outgunned and trying to get something off the front but nothing sticking. Held up by a crash in the middle of 3 to go and had to chase super hard just to get back on. Made it but was gassed for the final lap so salvaged what I could.

Both won by a Jelly Belly pro, both races I was where I needed to be coming in to the sprint and just couldn't finish it off. The learning curve seems to be flattening though which is encouraging.

I actually finished 10th in the m35s yesterday. I'm happy as I felt like I was last, and our overall rider series gives points to 15th place. 5 is non-zero.

Davis 4th of July.

35+ 123, DNF. Haven't failed like that in some time. About 30 minutes in I was sitting in near the back coming out of a series of turns and saw that a small group of us had been gapped off badly. WTF??? I wasn't nearly attentive enough and buried myself trying to bridge. Got most of the way and needed help, elbow flicked, but nobody was there. Then the moto ref came around and it was over.

3's. 16 of 40. Equally lame. 3 laps in jumped away from the field with a rider we were marking and one of my contact lenses popped out. No good and depth perception was immediately gone. Ended up falling back and sitting on the back of the field. Waited for 2 to go and tied to come around the field, but failed. Couldn't put my bike where I wanted safely. No good. Doubly bad races.

July 4th last.

Legs felt great. Heat was getting to me. It was like racing with fog.
going in to final corner 5th wheel, Davis guy crashes right in front of me. Avoided going down but had to unclip. That's racing. :l

I was watching someone I thought was you. First before the race as I was running around packing bike bags and then a bit in the race. I forgot how many from your team were there - but I saw one.

Sucks, but experience points always count for something!

As in, learn from failure and do it better next time.

Sometimes #thatsbikeracing , but sometimes you can do something different next time.

I was the only one there for the crit, we had another guy in the RR though.

Hopefully you didn't witness my failure in the crit in too much depth!!

I also though I saw you in the wheel pit giving time splits to the LUX kids; saw Roy and another guy, must've been you.

Btw I always loved the Volunteer Park crit, it was just down the road from my old apt. Never won it but got 2nd in the 3's, then moved before I had a chance to do it in the p1/2.

The pro was Steve F. I assume; saw him win the Ballard crit in 2011. (little) Dude can sprint!!

Btw #2 is Tacoma Twilight in the downtown course or that ****ty neighborhood course? The downtown course was rad, the later one not so much.

Daniel broke both his wheels today in a 70+ mile RR. He let the front group get away then bridged up. By that time he got there, there was another group off. Finished 16 sec down, a couple min in front of the big group. https://www.sintmartinusprijs.be/imag...itslagrit2.pdf
Tomorrow AM TT, afternoon 77miler, followed by another 75+ miler Monday.

Davis crit p/1/2; I didn't break any bones this year!

Just two spokes.

Took a free lap, got back in, tried to get off the front a few times and failed. Too tired to sprint.

Good training, bad racing.

I also had a disappointing Davis. 45+123 I had really good fitness, maybe the best in the last few seasons. I was in great position all race, right where I wanted with 3 to go, 2 to go, 1 to go i get swarmed and I lost my nerve, lost the wheel I was marking, and lost a dozen spots. I should have anticipated it and burned a match to get clear road, but I hesitated and that was that. Bleh.

Oh so I forgot to add to my Davis adventure.

Right before leaving I spotted a piece of wire in my rear tubular. Pulled it out, and it started to deflate. Quickly swapped cassette to my training wheel.
There was another crash mid race, which I managed to avoid. Overall field was sketchy as ****. Kind of weird. Usually it's smooth.
With 15 minutes to go the bolts on my seat got loose so the seat was moving all around. I was just hopping it wouldn't fall off completely.
Then of course there was a crash I got caught behind on final corner. I was in top 5-6 too. I have no idea why davis Junior did to wipe out that way.
If my brain wasn't a mush from the heat, I would have attacked on final lap and bridged to two guys slightly a head.
