Not so much a question of gear inches / how tough you are, just tooth count.

I like my 39/16 when I'm feeling strong. I did a few 8,000'+ centuries on that gear this year.
However, I'm kinda weak now, and it's the perfect gear for getting around town on.
Obviously I could also ride 48/19 or something silmilar.
