Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Shimano should get a clue and manufacture cogs with more than 16T.

I didn't think DA made anything larger than 16T? What kind of cog is everyone riding then?

As far as Simano cogs are concerned, I imagine Shimano is thinking more about track racing.
Are Shimano cogs NJS stamped? Maybe I'm wrong but real track racers probably aren't using a cog larger than 16T. Shimano is the biggest giant in the component business and probably not worried about satisfying a few fixed gear geeks by making bigger cogs.

Is anyone out there using a Surly cog with an Izumi track chain? I tried it and got nothing but intense grinding noises, despite having everything installed and set up properly, including chainline. I'm getting way smoother results with an EAI cog and Izumi track chain.

Bikes: 'Cha-ruzu Fosuta Orusan Kein' Fuji Track (2005), Schwinn Tank MTB (?), Fuji Royale (1979)

shimano and others used to make larger sized cogs. me and some SF riders have NJS 17t cogs.

My shimano 16T is not NJS. I originally wanted 17T but the shop at the time could only get shimano cogs. Now I need an 18T and will probably go for soma or EAI...

I think that the street fixed gear fever has increased sales of track componentry quite a bit (A LOT). You can tell by the way a lot of larger bicycle manufacturers are making street fixed gear bikes (specialized, bianchi, khs, raleigh, etc) Most of these bikes come with shimano 16T cogs and large chainrings (>44T). I think that the gearing is too tall for a beginner street fixed gear and the reason being that shimano doesn't supply cogs over 16T. It would be too expensive to spec EAI or something like that since the bike companies probably get great deals from a giant like Shimano...

...and yes, track racers probably don't need anything larger than a 16T for the Velodrome.

That does surprise me that Shimano presently stops at 16t, when more than half the cogs used on this forum are larger than that!
Anyways, their quality leaves something to be desired, IMO.
