Just to make sure I understand, then, they're done continually? What I've been trying is trackstand -> start pedalling backwards, and I always seem to get stuck at the top/bottom position -- so I need more momentum to get past there?

(and seated? Does this mean I should work more on seated trackstands to get the hang of those? I can vaguely do them, but it seems like chain slop makes a lot more difference when seated than when standing)
I had a breakthrough in my backwards circles when I stopped looking at the front wheel or handlebars. My balance is tons better and I'm smoother if I look over my shoulder to where I want to end up. And keep your weight back, though you don't have to sit; just don't be all junk-on-stem.
