Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I was just going to post asking about backwards circles, coincidentally, so I'll tag onto this thread.

Just to make sure I understand, then, they're done continually? What I've been trying is trackstand -> start pedalling backwards, and I always seem to get stuck at the top/bottom position -- so I need more momentum to get past there?

(and seated? Does this mean I should work more on seated trackstands to get the hang of those? I can vaguely do them, but it seems like chain slop makes a lot more difference when seated than when standing)

Bikes: yes

try and get the first half of your backward circle to have enough momentum that you roll through that dead spot.

I had a breakthrough in my backwards circles when I stopped looking at the front wheel or handlebars. My balance is tons better and I'm smoother if I look over my shoulder to where I want to end up. And keep your weight back, though you don't have to sit; just don't be all junk-on-stem.

tricks are the new mating dance, no-handed backwards circles will land you a mate sooner than flying away from them at 30mph.
