why was armstrong riding in CP in the first place? most likely... for fun. that should be all that matters in anything we do. we shouldn't need reasons, categories, races and sponsors to ENJOY something. it shouldn't be about any of that.
we should push eachother, ourselves and our friends for no other reason than we enjoy it. not everything needs a venue.
The funny thing about the blog posting mentioned in the OP's post is that it's a joke about an absolutely unknown NYC bike club official, the Lance-ness of it is incidental.
The thing is, VD, road racing IS lots of fun, just like track racing is, just like alleycats are, just like centuries are, just like all kinds of other things you can do on a bike. What's wrong with taking fun seriously?
I am actually curious to hear your response. Why wouldn't you accept something people participate in voluntarily as a legitimate pursuit of good times?
Oh, and next time you want to throw around a fake sprint speed number to get people worked up, try something like "42" -- impressive, but within reason. You'll get much better arguments and nobody'll immediately think you're lying.
