Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i fully support callin someone out, but i also think it can be done without being a total condescending ******. i also think it's silly to think, as many roadies seem to, that anyone who is fast would would race, and that anyone who isn't racing isn't fast.

Going 50 MPH takes ~4X as much power as going 31. No one doubts he can go 30, or 35, or 40... but to come into a public forum and claim world-record speeds without expecting to be called out...

Me neither, it was a joke my friend.

You gotta love internet forums, you can say anything you want and never have any proof or be able to back it up.

and as far as the 25mph average on a century... the century we averaged 20mph was out to montauk. popdelusion is probably the only other person here that might be familiar with that stretch. it's essentially entirely flat. there are a few rolling hills here and there, but yeah... basically totally flat. six of us averaged 20mph fixed/brakeless with an average gearing of around 48x16 with not much of a problem so we got to thinking about what we'd be able to pull on geared bikes. VD, yoshi, and lee figured they could swing 25. as VD mentioned earlier - that's an expected avg. having ridden a good bit with each of them and being the reason they didn't avg higher on the last century i think they can swing it. i doubt my ability to do so though, but i'm up for trying. i mean, if i get a snazzy matching kit that'll give me a lot of extra speed right!?
All sprint talk aside, a sub 4-hour century would be quite doable on that route; I do think you may need a bigger group of riders to maintain that pace, especially if there's any wind at all, since the limiting factor is going to be how much time you guys can spend resting.

I think the significant difference between making the attempt on track bikes as opposed to road bikes wouldn't have to do with sustainable speed (and I think those rollers may actually be easier fixed than they are on road bikes), but with the ability of riders pulling off being able to start resting immediately.

This thread has come a long way since yesterday. Wow.

I have not ridden with VD, but it is not unreasonable to believe many of the claims he is making. In fact, it is not unreasonable to believe he's the fastest guy on a bike in all of New York--somebody has to be, why not him. But it is completely fair and reasonable to call out his claim of 50+mph sprints based on empirical evidence to the contrary, i.e. world record results both on the road and the track. At the end of the day, there is only one way to prove the matter and settle the score...the claim must be tested and verified scientifically and it's rather an easy thing to do.

To make matters worse, it's almost as if he makes the claim without giving anyone the basis to test it (I don't race.. I mostly ride at dark when nobody is around). If I claim I have a tiny unicorn in my clenched fist that only I can see, but when I open it up for inspection, it disappears, how is this claim any different? Why should we believe this? One MUST be skeptical when unreasonable claims get thrown around like this. As for ******baggery, well, I guess some of that comes with the nature of the internet. I'd like to think that most people calling him out are not douchbags at all--that we all share a common love. Yes things can get competitive here, but doesn't that too come with the territory? Most people naturally like to measure themselves up with others and make comparisons.

see, that's how ya call someone out without being a ******bag, and i don't think that everyone in this thread has been one, just a couple people. i've never been interested in this turning into some multipage ****fest, so i'm not gonna keep goin on about it. in the end, everyone has been invited to come ride with us whenever you want and this is a sincere and friendly invite, not some ego driven call out. all of us ride everyday and we do it for fun, not to prove anything. if people wanna keep fixating on a claim that really has no consequence then let em, but if something like that bothers people so much then again, i really have to question the reason they ride.

Thanks...I may seriously want to finally do the Montauk Century this year (maybe fixed). Might love to ride with you guys if you're doing it again.

i think that's a good point. riding in any form of a paceline would be good, which we really didn't do at all on the first ride simply because we weren't aiming for speed. we were actually trying to keep it slow and leisurely and stick to 18mph but the route is so straight and flat it was hard to go sub20. when we do the ride shooting for 25mph avg i'm sure we'll be more conscious of conserving energy and stick to a paceline, but at the same time it can be hard at times on the sketchy shoulder out there, and VD has sight issues that play into things. i also need to practice being in a paceline as i'm sure a few others would.

we didn't do the actual organized century. i know a few people who have done it and i've heard mixed reviews due to overcrowding and whatnot. i'm sure if you manage to stay out front it's not that bad though. we just did it one weekend in january cause it was in the fifties and we couldn't pass that weather up. it was my first time riding out there and it was great but kinda nasty due to some intense fog and road grime.

Yep, that overcrowding is an issue that has kept me from doing it before... I did the NY Century a couple years ago, and had the same 'problem', but it was still fun to do.

yeah, i hear the NY Century is terrible, as is the 5 Borough ride - but riding on the FDR and BQE while they're blocked to traffic sounds damned appealing.

i'll take being from louisiana over that any day.
It's okay man. I'm originally from Minnesota. Every time I tell people that they ask me why I don't have an accent. Apparently the movie Fargo is the only thing people know about Minnesota.

you being from Minnesota means that we are bound together eternally by killer ****ing mosquitos! i spent a week in Minnesota once and everyone was like "watch out for the mosquitos!" and i scoffed, being from louisiana and thinking the swamp mosquitos were bad ass. HELL NO! minnesota mosquitos were huge and fearless! if you didn't kill them soon enough your arm would go numb.

i don't have an accent either, so when i sall "ya'll" my students are always startled. "are you from the country?"

Your are correct. From now on I will assume VD is the fastest rider in the WORLD....not just NYC. My apologies for being a ******. Thankfully I have been called worse and yes, I got over it..
