i fully support callin someone out, but i also think it can be done without being a total condescending ******. i also think it's silly to think, as many roadies seem to, that anyone who is fast would would race, and that anyone who isn't racing isn't fast.

Going 50 MPH takes ~4X as much power as going 31. No one doubts he can go 30, or 35, or 40... but to come into a public forum and claim world-record speeds without expecting to be called out...

You gotta love internet forums, you can say anything you want and never have any proof or be able to back it up.

and as far as the 25mph average on a century... the century we averaged 20mph was out to montauk. popdelusion is probably the only other person here that might be familiar with that stretch. it's essentially entirely flat. there are a few rolling hills here and there, but yeah... basically totally flat. six of us averaged 20mph fixed/brakeless with an average gearing of around 48x16 with not much of a problem so we got to thinking about what we'd be able to pull on geared bikes. VD, yoshi, and lee figured they could swing 25. as VD mentioned earlier - that's an expected avg. having ridden a good bit with each of them and being the reason they didn't avg higher on the last century i think they can swing it. i doubt my ability to do so though, but i'm up for trying. i mean, if i get a snazzy matching kit that'll give me a lot of extra speed right!?

I think the significant difference between making the attempt on track bikes as opposed to road bikes wouldn't have to do with sustainable speed (and I think those rollers may actually be easier fixed than they are on road bikes), but with the ability of riders pulling off being able to start resting immediately.

This thread has come a long way since yesterday. Wow.
I have not ridden with VD, but it is not unreasonable to believe many of the claims he is making. In fact, it is not unreasonable to believe he's the fastest guy on a bike in all of New York--somebody has to be, why not him. But it is completely fair and reasonable to call out his claim of 50+mph sprints based on empirical evidence to the contrary, i.e. world record results both on the road and the track. At the end of the day, there is only one way to prove the matter and settle the score...the claim must be tested and verified scientifically and it's rather an easy thing to do.
To make matters worse, it's almost as if he makes the claim without giving anyone the basis to test it (I don't race.. I mostly ride at dark when nobody is around). If I claim I have a tiny unicorn in my clenched fist that only I can see, but when I open it up for inspection, it disappears, how is this claim any different? Why should we believe this? One MUST be skeptical when unreasonable claims get thrown around like this. As for ******baggery, well, I guess some of that comes with the nature of the internet. I'd like to think that most people calling him out are not douchbags at all--that we all share a common love. Yes things can get competitive here, but doesn't that too come with the territory? Most people naturally like to measure themselves up with others and make comparisons.

see, that's how ya call someone out without being a ******bag, and i don't think that everyone in this thread has been one, just a couple people. i've never been interested in this turning into some multipage ****fest, so i'm not gonna keep goin on about it. in the end, everyone has been invited to come ride with us whenever you want and this is a sincere and friendly invite, not some ego driven call out. all of us ride everyday and we do it for fun, not to prove anything. if people wanna keep fixating on a claim that really has no consequence then let em, but if something like that bothers people so much then again, i really have to question the reason they ride.

Thanks...I may seriously want to finally do the Montauk Century this year (maybe fixed). Might love to ride with you guys if you're doing it again.
