Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorry, I race both road and track and know plenty of the NYC fixie crew, and I hate to call BS with regard to anyone, but there's a BIG difference between sprinting at 31 mph and sprinting at 50 mph. 31 mph is an average beginner's road race sprint, even I can do that and I'm no sprinter; 50 mph is breaking the world record.

It's just not possible to do what VD's talking about unless he's doing it on rollers or drafting a truck; in neither case would it be at all appropriate to call what he's doing a sprint

Basically, it's just not cool to accuse people of being insecure if you're exaggerating—and egomaniacally so—to begin with.

I'm quite secure in the fact that I'm not a world-class sprinter. Really, I know it's OK. Nobody's paying me to sprint. 50mph in the flats is beyond what most professional cyclists can generate, so I think it's reasonable to question it. I know there are people faster than me and there always will be, so you can cool it with the insecure bit. Things that sound too good to be true usually are.

So when do the discussions with the pro teams start?

it's just such a stupid discussion to have--particularly in the context of the post that started the tangent--which is completely reasonable and back a few pages for anyone who cares to see how these things take silly turns.

it's fun to get excited about things--unless you do it on the internet.

You refuse to believe something that he's provided some level of proof on (more than anyone has provided in a counterpoint, conjecture is not proof). The purpose of discussing further past this point is one of merely measuring dicks to see who thinks their balls weight the most. Judging by the wattage charts, measured caloric intake, weigh weeni-ing, etc... I hardly see any spandex monkeys giving an inch to the possibility of the accuracy of VD's statements just because you cannot understand how someone in professional level shape does not want to participate in the ridiculousness that is racing. Barring Lance Armstrong himself attesting to his speed, this will just be a bunch of people breaking out the calipers.

Fine, which is why I tried to return it to the OPs original post and the misinterpretation of it that led to all of this d**k-waving. Plenty of people here exaggerate their stats, but you've been doing it and claiming innocence WHILE calling other people out on their obsession WITH stats. That I don't get. You should be above that.

No, dude...I'm pretty sure I know the context of that photo. It ain't evidence. I remember someone mentioning that number talking about working up roller tricks for a certain video that's been circulating lately.

So just stop...you're being ridiculous.

That wasn't really addressed at you, I'm just saying ... VD's by and far the fastest person on a bike I've ever seen. The possibility of him hitting 50+ is slim, but if there's anyone who would be able, t'would be him.

Anyways, Lance Armstrong ...

because that's the problem with the whole situation--stats and standings don't mean anything. i'm not opposed to throwing them out there--well aware that they'll throw everyne into a tizzy and people will come out of the woodwork to question them and mock me. they're just numbers--completely meaningless. i don't mind being called out on stuff. it's fun. it's fun to see how seriously people take these things--particularly in the context of the first post in the thread.

why was armstrong riding in CP in the first place? most likely... for fun. that should be all that matters in anything we do. we shouldn't need reasons, categories, races and sponsors to ENJOY something. it shouldn't be about any of that.

we should push eachother, ourselves and our friends for no other reason than we enjoy it. not everything needs a venue.

It's ridiculous how they don't pay the team leaders nearly enough to take you away from your messenger job.

The funny thing about the blog posting mentioned in the OP's post is that it's a joke about an absolutely unknown NYC bike club official, the Lance-ness of it is incidental.

The thing is, VD, road racing IS lots of fun, just like track racing is, just like alleycats are, just like centuries are, just like all kinds of other things you can do on a bike. What's wrong with taking fun seriously?

I am actually curious to hear your response. Why wouldn't you accept something people participate in voluntarily as a legitimate pursuit of good times?

Oh, and next time you want to throw around a fake sprint speed number to get people worked up, try something like "42" -- impressive, but within reason. You'll get much better arguments and nobody'll immediately think you're lying.

Why is it unbelievable that it might be more fun for someone to not race and just ride?

Because nobody argued that. VD was the only one to dismiss racing as somehow unworthy of fun. I'm pretty sure everybody has fun "just" riding, even if they race. I have fun when I don't race, I have fun when I do.

The only thing I don't like doing on a bike is riding in freezing rain, which seems like a distinct possibility later on tonight.

Even if he's 5 mph on his 50 mph sprint, it's still way faster than I've ever sprinted. So I'm sure he's fast, especially since he's got someone who's ridden with him before saying how fast he is.

Besides, he doesn't race, so those of us who do will never get embarrassed by him.

Of course, it does sound like he's in the NYC area, so maybe he'll still end up smoking us on his single speed.

I'll be hiding inside.

You got on a public forum claiming that you can out-sprint the world's fastest professional cyclists, including the Sprint specialists, and are genuinely surprised that someone would question you?

The US Record for a 200-meter flying start track sprint is 44.62 mph. You should head down to the velodrome and claim your record. Congratulations. You're at least the fastest cyclist in America, if not the world. And it looks like the world sprint record has held since 1995--you really should go and shake that one loose too.

i didn't really claim much other than some friends and i wanted to do a 25+mph century and were hoping for some 40+ sprints because a few of us had done better. i'm not in the least bit surprised. you're all very predictably cranky. i was hoping it would happen and i'm hoping that the next time you go fast, that you think about it more in terms of how the scenery looks as it zips by than you do about what your wattage meter spits out.

anyone who wants to come on that ride with us is welcome to. just don't draft me, cos i can't see.
