I have the Shimanos like that on a geared bike & rarely use the platform side, but it's nice if a bikeless friend wants to ride with. If we are talking about fixed, it would be a pain in the ass to stop with out some kind of pedal restraint. Without coasting ability, a double sided clipless pedal can save a couple seconds of fumbling.
