Eugene gets it bad every year too. We don't reach 5000, but we'll spend a month in the 1000 range. I take benadryl before bed (helps me sleep, seems to keep it in the system enough to take the edge off) and I take a shower before bed to get the pollen off my skin and out of my hair. Mostly I just sneeze a lot.
